A Call to Persevere in Faith

It鈥檚 often said that the hardest step in any journey is the first step. Be it an unknown outcome, a fear of failure, or an indolent attitude that holds us back, we often fail to start. In my experience, the arduous task of staying focused over the long term can be just as difficult as taking that first step. Persevering when our enthusiasm and motivation are quick to wane is difficult.

In Hebrews 10:32-39, the author writes words of encouragement to the Hebrew people as they relate to keeping the faith. Throughout history, Christians suffered great persecution for their faith. The author reminds them of the early days shortly after salvation鈥攎otivation is high, sins are forgiven, and angels are rejoicing. This is meant to refocus and remind them of how they have already endured this type of hardship. He encourages them to keep their eye on the prize and to regain the confidence they found in earlier times.

Soon after the Advent season comes New Years and the season of resolution. As I reflect on Hebrews 10:32 and the verses that follow, I am reminded of the lack of successful follow-through that plagues humankind on the tail of the season of remembrance. It parallels the burnout the author was addressing. The reiteration of healthy eating and exercise combined with aspirations of financial peace and/or personal growth often start out with vim and vigor. We wake up early; we eat healthy and we budget. However, history shows that by the second week of February, a majority of us have missed the mark. Countless books and articles provide guidance on how to remain committed. One common theme in all of them is to stay focused on what鈥檚 to come and the 鈥減rize鈥� you will earn.

Don鈥檛 let your salvation and your motivation for the kingdom become a victim to a 鈥渞esolution season鈥� (10:36). 鈥淵ou need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay鈥� (10:36-37).
