Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters Highlights the Influence of Mentors and the Importance of Women’s Leadership

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Women’s History Month honors the mothers, mentors, and history‑makers who shaped lives and opened doors for generations. At Gardner‑Webb University, that legacy continues through the women who lead across campus, including five members of the GWU president’s cabinet. Throughout the month, they will share their stories, reflecting on the opportunities women have today and those who guided them along the way.

Today’s column is by Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters.

15 years in higher education: joined the faculty of the Hunt School of Nursing (HSON) at �۶�ֱ�� University in 2011 and has served as a program chair, associate dean, and later served as its dean. She has also served as dean of the College of Health Sciences.

Waters reflects on celebrating women’s history.

Women’s History Month is a meaningful time to celebrate the accomplishments and significant contributions of women. It offers an opportunity to reflect on the past, recognize the impact of women today, and inspire the generations who will lead the future.

Throughout my professional journey, I have been inspired and influenced by both women and men whose leadership, mentorship, and example have made a lasting impact on me. Dr. Sharon Starr (former dean, Hunt School of Nursing and associate provost for College of Health Sciences) provided a strong example of women’s leadership in action. Her guidance and example were both meaningful and influential during my time working with her.

Likewise, during the time I worked with Dr. Ben Leslie (former provost and executive vice president of Academic Affairs) he consistently supported and advocated for women leadership. He allowed an opportunity for women leaders on campus to be involved in a structured Women In Leadership (WIL) community. Because of his support in allowing this community of women leaders to meet regularly, the experiences had a lasting positive impact on me and provided an important network of encouragement, support, and shared learning.

I intentionally support other women by being present and accessible, building meaningful relationships, and engaging in individual conversations are important aspects of supporting and mentoring others. Being intentional about sharing knowledge and experiences creates opportunities for growth. We all learn from one another, and when we take the time to share and genuinely care, everyone benefits.

The one piece of advice I hope young women carry with them beyond �۶�ֱ�� is to be your authentic self, represent well, and be prepared to lead, influence, and co-create change. Never stop learning.

Interim Vice President of Advancement Karen Bruce Reflects on Opportunity, Calling, and Stewardship

Today’s reflection is from Interim Vice President for Advancement Karen Bruce.

Career highlights:

More than 20 years of leadership experience across Christian higher education, nonprofit organizations, and corporate environments.
Previously served in leadership roles at Faulkner University, Montgomery, Ala.

Bruce shares her thoughts on Women’s History Month.

There was a time when women in America were not given the opportunities they have today. I sometimes struggle to imagine what my life might have looked like if I had been born 10, 15, or even 20 years earlier. Personally, I am grateful that I have the opportunity to use the gifts and talents the Lord has given me for His purpose—even when that purpose doesn’t fit neatly into the traditional careers that were often encouraged for women when I was a young girl.

Women’s History Month reminds me that many of the opportunities we have today exist because of the courage, perseverance, and faith of the women who came before us as well as the men and women who opened the doors for others to walk through.

My life has been filled with both men and women who have inspired, encouraged, and advocated for the future I enjoy today. One woman in particular has inspired me, though I never met her and very little is written about her.

Her name is Sheerah. Scripture tells us that she was the great-granddaughter of Joseph, the granddaughter of Ephraim, and the daughter of Beriah. In 1 Chronicles 7, tucked within a genealogy, we learn that she was the woman who built three cities.

We know almost nothing about her life, yet God chose to record her name and her accomplishment in Scripture. As I have reflected on what her life might have been like, I have found great inspiration in her story. It reminds me that faithful work—even when it seems quiet or unnoticed—can have lasting impact.

When I first arrived at �۶�ֱ��, there were two women serving on the university’s Cabinet. Today, there are five. That change is more than numbers—it reflects opportunity, balance, and representation.

It is especially meaningful when you consider that more than 60% of �۶�ֱ��’s student body is female. Having women in key leadership positions is part of the guidance and formation we provide as a university community. We want our students to see women modeling leadership, service, and stewardship in ways that help them imagine the opportunities they themselves may pursue in the future.

For female students, employees, and future leaders, it sends a clear message that �۶�ֱ�� is a place where women are valued, where their voices matter, and where they can grow into positions of leadership and influence. When students see women leading with integrity, faith, and excellence, it expands their vision of what God may be calling them to do in the world.

Mentoring relationships with students, faculty or staff are incredibly meaningful to me, and each one is unique. For some, I am simply a friend or a sounding board when they need someone to listen. For others, I may be an encourager—recognizing their strengths and urging them to build on the gifts they’ve been given.

Sometimes my role is to be a prayer partner, bringing their challenges, obstacles, and hopes—even their deepest goals—to a Father who already knows the path He has for them. And in other moments, it may be as simple as opening a door, making an introduction, or helping them see possibilities they may not yet see for themselves.

One piece of advice I hope young women will carry with them beyond �۶�ֱ�� is this: Do not be afraid to use the gifts God has given you. Your path may not always look like the one that others expect, but faithfulness to your calling will always matter more than fitting into someone else’s definition of success. Seek wise counsel, work diligently, and trust that the Lord can use your gifts in ways far greater than you can imagine.

Phillip Lewis Returns to �۶�ֱ�� as Associate Vice President for Web & Digital Communications

Experienced Digital Strategist to Guide University’s Web Presence and Online Engagement

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�۶�ֱ�� Vice President for Marketing and Communications Thea Thompson has named Phillip Lewis as the University’s associate vice president for Web & Digital Communications. He brings more than 15 years of experience in website management, digital content strategy, and online communications, including previous service as GWU’s senior web developer and positions with major organizations across the Charlotte region. In his new role at �۶�ֱ��, Lewis will lead a team of professionals in managing the main University website, social media channels, and email communication

“As higher education continues to evolve, our digital presence plays a critical role in how prospective students and families discover and engage with �۶�ֱ��,” Thompson stated. “Phillip brings the experience, technical expertise, and strategic perspective needed to lead that work, along with a deep understanding of our mission and what makes this university distinctive. Having worked with him previously, I’m excited to welcome him back and confident his leadership will help strengthen our digital presence and support �۶�ֱ��’s continued growth.”

Most recently, Lewis served as senior digital marketing manager for AvidXchange, where he oversaw the company’s main website, worked closely with departments across the organization, and helped guide its overall online presence.

Before that, as Gardner‑Webb’s senior web developer, he ensured the University’s website remained accurate, user‑friendly, and aligned with institutional goals. He also supported major projects, including the design of the University’s capital campaign website.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to �۶�ֱ�� and support its mission and vision,” Lewis affirmed. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across campus to help advance the university’s goals as we work to move this wonderful institution forward.”

Earlier in his career, Lewis spent more than a decade with the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance (formerly the Charlotte Chamber), where he managed the organization’s websites, led several major redesigns, supported marketing initiatives, and developed online tools to serve businesses across the region.

He also brings a strong foundation in graphic design, creating visual concepts for websites, marketing materials, digital campaigns, and other projects. This creative background enhances his ability to pair clear communication with strong visual presentation.

Lewis earned bachelor’s degrees in communications with a concentration in marketing and English literature from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. His career reflects a commitment to helping organizations communicate effectively and connect audiences with the information they need.

Brian Speer Promoted to �۶�ֱ�� Associate Vice President of Facilities Operations

Former Director of Operations Administration is Experienced Servant Leader

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Vice President for Finance and Administration R. Thomas Welch has named Brian Speer as associate vice president of Facilities Operations. Speer previously served as the director of Operations Administration. In his new role, Speer will collaborate with various campus departments to elevate the student experience both inside and outside the classroom.

“We know that learning and the collegiate experience are only fully attainable when students feel accepted, safe, and comfortable,” Welch asserted. “Facilities Operations and its leadership are vital to providing this environment for our community. This decision reflects our commitment to choosing a leader who embraces the charge to make GWU a family—a home for our students—and an exceptional place to gain skills and knowledge for the next steps in life.”

As associate vice president of Facilities Operations, Speer’s responsibilities include managing the areas of housekeeping, maintenance, event services, occupational safety, and the University’s grounds.

“More than anything, I want Christ to shine through in everything I do—in my leadership of the Operations staff, in interactions with students, staff, and faculty, and in partnerships with vendors and contractors,” Speer shared. “I want to be both a quarterback and cheerleader for our Operations team. I want the Operations employees to be recognized for the vital positions they hold. They are an amazing team of individuals, and I want to help them experience joy and purpose in the work they do here at GWU.”

He continued, “While there is much to learn, I ask the Lord for wisdom on how to lead like Christ in this new position. My heart is what Paul shared with the Colossians, ‘Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.’” (Col. 3:23-24)

Speer joined the �۶�ֱ�� staff in May 2008 as part of Event Services. In December 2008, he became manager of Event Services and established foundational protocols for facility setup and event logistics, managing teams in the preparation and maintenance of 600+ campus venues annually to support academic, athletic, and community programming. In 2010, he became director of Operations Administration, where his role was to manage project pipelines from design through completion, including recent Tucker Student Center renovations, dorm HVAC upgrades, and athletic facility improvements.

Speer has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from UNC-Charlotte and a master’s in Christian education from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He serves as one of the preaching elders at Shepherding Center Ministries, in Gastonia, N.C. He and his wife, Laura, have been married 31 years. They have nine children and five grandchildren.

Dr. Tracy Arnold Appointed Dean of �۶�ֱ�� University’s College of Health Sciences

Arnold Steps into the Permanent Role with a Strong Record of Leadership and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters has announced the appointment of Dr. Tracy Arnold as dean of the College of Health Sciences (CoHS). Arnold has served as interim dean since April 2025 and previously served as CoHS associate dean.

In her new role as dean, Arnold will continue to work closely with faculty and staff to support the college’s ongoing priorities and initiatives. “Dr. Arnold brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role,” Waters emphasized. “With a background as a dean/director of the Hunt School of Nursing, an associate dean, and an interim dean for the College of Health Sciences, she has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing academic excellence and fostering a supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Arnold’s exceptional organizational and leadership abilities have strengthened the college and positioned it for sustained growth and success. I am confident that her continued leadership will further advance the College of Health Sciences’ mission and provide momentum and strategic direction for the future.”

A native of Sylva, N.C., Arnold is a four-time graduate of �۶�ֱ��. She received her Associate Degree in Nursing in 2002, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2004, Master of Science in Nursing in Nursing Administration in 2006 and Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2012. She worked eight years at CaroMont Health in Gastonia, N.C., in a variety of departments and served various leadership roles. She began as full-time faculty in HSON in 2010 and has served as BSN program and licensure coordinator, chair of pre-licensure nursing programs, associate director, and director.

“I am deeply honored by this appointment and grateful for the confidence and support of President (Nate) Evans, Dr. Waters, and my colleagues across the College of Health Sciences,” Arnold stated. “I also appreciate the leadership of Dr. Waters and the strong foundation she established, which continues to guide and strengthen the work of the College.”

She continued, “I look forward to building on our momentum by working closely with department and school leaders to advance strategic initiatives that support our faculty, staff, and students, while positioning the College for continued growth and success. Our college remains committed to being Christ-centered, student-focused, and purpose-driven, while furthering teaching excellence, student success, and meaningful engagement in health sciences education and practice.”

Additionally, Arnold’s accreditation expertise was recognized nationally when she was elected in 2024 to a three-year term on the Board of Commissioners for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Through her voluntary service with ACEN, she has developed extensive knowledge of accreditation processes and standards, serving since 2014 as a peer evaluator, team chair, and member of the Evaluation Review Panel. This experience equips her to provide informed leadership and support for accreditation across all College of Health Sciences programs, encompassing multiple disciplines and accrediting bodies.

Former Web & Digital Marketing Communications Leader Brings Vision and Dedication to New Position

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�۶�ֱ�� President Nate Evans has named Theandra “Thea” Thompson as vice president of Marketing and Communications. Thompson, the former associate vice president of Web & Digital Communications, has served as interim vice president of Marketing since July 1.

As vice president of the Division of Marketing and Communications, Thompson directs a team that promotes the University’s mission and message. They develop engaging content for video, advertising, news and social media sites; provide marketing advice and strategies; produce creative graphic design projects; manage the University’s website; and lead the mascot program.

Evans stated, “Having worked closely with Thea for several years, I have seen firsthand the trust she inspires and the hard work she invests in strengthening �۶�ֱ��’s message and mission. She approaches every challenge with professionalism, creativity, and a deep commitment to the University. Thea has earned the respect of colleagues across campus, and I am confident she will provide strong, strategic leadership for our marketing and communications efforts in the years ahead.”

While serving as interim, Thompson and her team have continued to strengthen the University’s brand, enhance and implement communication strategies and work to facilitate additional partnerships across campus. Thompson also worked closely with the Marketing and Communications team to lead the strategic development of a University brand campaign scheduled for launch in 2026.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve �۶�ֱ�� in this role, and I want to thank President Evans for his trust and support,” Thompson asserted. “�۶�ֱ�� has been my home for the past five years, and I care deeply about the people and the mission that shape this University. I am especially grateful for our marketing and communications team. Their knowledge, creativity, and commitment are vital to our success, and I am honored to work alongside them.”

Thompson’s dedication during her interim term has laid a strong foundation for the next chapter in �۶�ֱ��’s marketing and communications efforts. “As we move forward, my focus is on elevating �۶�ֱ��’s visibility and ensuring our message reflects the strength, purpose, and heart of this community,” Thompson affirmed. “We have an incredible story to tell, and our talented team plays a central role in sharing it. I am excited to build on our progress and help show the world who we are and who we are becoming.”

Thompson joined the University in January 2020 as associate vice president of Web & Digital Communications. She has managed the University’s transition to a new website, helped create an interactive online map of campus, coordinated the revision of the calendar to include all campus events and academic schedules, and directed the development of a new interactive virtual tour of campus.

Thompson was instrumental in choosing the current live mascot for the University, and has supervised Bo’s care, campus appearances, and social media presence. She has also enhanced the University’s website to align with Webb Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and implemented a sustainable process for ongoing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, including continuous monitoring through a digital accessibility platform and annual reviews conducted by certified experts.

Prior to joining �۶�ֱ��, Thompson worked as a digital analyst at Masco Retail Support Services and Food Lion Corporate as a digital engagement specialist for web and mobile app for three years and as digital marketing coordinator for two years.

She completed the HighEdWeb 2023 Leadership Academy in December 2023 and received a certificate in Digital Marketing in 2017 from Rutgers University Executive Education Program. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration with a concentration in management and marketing from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�۶�ֱ�� University President Nate Evans has named Dr. Nicole Waters as the next provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. Waters has served as interim provost since April, providing skilled guidance during a period of transition while advancing key academic priorities across the University.

President Nate Evans praised Waters’ leadership and long-standing commitment to the University. “Dr. Waters has demonstrated steady, student-centered leadership during a critical season for �۶�ֱ��, and I am grateful she has accepted the call to serve as our next provost and vice president for academic affairs,” Evans said. “With more than 14 years of dedicated service to GWU, she brings a deep commitment to academic excellence, a collaborative spirit with faculty and staff, and a sincere passion for helping students discover their calling. I am confident that under her leadership, our academic programs will continue to grow in quality, innovation, and impact as we live out our mission.”

A two-time �۶�ֱ�� alumna and longtime academic leader, Waters joined the faculty of the Hunt School of Nursing (HSON) in 2011 and has served as a program chair, associate dean, and later served as its dean. She has also served as dean of the College of Health Sciences. As interim provost, she has guided academic planning, supported faculty development and strengthened initiatives that enhance student learning and success.

Reflecting on her appointment, Waters shared her commitment to the university community. “It is an honor to serve as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, and I am grateful to President Evans for the opportunity to continue this work in a role that allows me to support our faculty, staff and students,” Waters said. “I step into this role grounded in three core commitments: My love for the Lord, my dedication to �۶�ֱ�� University, and my care for the people who make this place a true home. A registered nurse with clinical experience in medical-surgical care, pediatrics, orthopedics and medical missions, Waters was named Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina for 2025. She is an alumna of the National League for Nursing (NLN) LEAD program and the UNC-Chapel Hill BRIDGES Academic Leadership Program.

Waters earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from �۶�ֱ�� University, a Master of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University and an associate degree in nursing from Gaston College.

Evans to Lead �۶�ֱ�� Into its Next Chapter of Growth and Mission Impact

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The �۶�ֱ�� University Board of Trustees has voted to appoint Nate Evans as the 14th president of �۶�ֱ�� University, following the completion of the presidential search process. Evans has served as interim president since February 2025 and previously as vice president for Advancement.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to serve as the next president of �۶�ֱ�� University,” Evans affirmed. “I want to thank the Board of Trustees and the presidential search committee for their confidence, and our entire campus community for their hard work and dedication during this time of transition. Over the past eight months, I have witnessed the strength, faith, and resilience that define �۶�ֱ��. This is a place where students discover their purpose, where faculty and staff live out their calling, and where our shared mission continues to change lives. As we look ahead, let’s build on our momentum, strengthen our foundation, expand our reach, and ensure that �۶�ֱ�� continues to thrive as a Christ-centered university of impact.”

Evans has provided steady, mission-centered leadership during a pivotal period of transition—strengthening �۶�ֱ��’s financial health, uniting its community, and reaffirming its Christ-centered mission. Working closely with University Cabinet members, he has led efforts that resulted in positive enrollment momentum, improved campus morale, and the elimination of the University’s structural deficit.

Under Evans’ leadership, �۶�ֱ�� has enhanced operational discipline, increased donor confidence, and expanded strategic partnerships across the region. The University has secured major philanthropic commitments, including the largest single gift to �۶�ֱ�� in more than 25 years, while advancing initiatives that elevate the student experience, reinforce fiscal responsibility, and strengthen institutional excellence.

“President Evans has demonstrated faith-filled leadership, integrity, and a clear vision for �۶�ֱ��’s future,” said Board Chair the Rev. Dr. Lamont Littlejohn Jr. “He has brought stability, unity, and momentum during a time of transition, and the Board has full confidence that he will continue leading this University forward with wisdom and purpose.”

Before being named interim president, Evans served as vice president for Advancement, where he led alumni relations, major gifts, the Bulldog Club, and the annual fund. Under his direction, �۶�ֱ�� raised more than $30 million in gifts and commitments, fueling capital improvements, scholarship funding, and academic initiatives. Prior to joining �۶�ֱ��, he held senior advancement roles at East Carolina University, where he began his higher education career in admissions before transitioning into university advancement.

A U.S. Air Force veteran and former small-business professional, Evans brings both discipline and entrepreneurial insight to his leadership. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in exercise and sports science with a minor in biology from East Carolina University and a Master of Science in human resource management from Western Carolina University.

As he assumes the permanent presidency, Evans has outlined a bold five-year vision focused on growth, innovation, and mission integrity. His plan includes expanding academic programs, deepening partnerships with churches and regional organizations, strengthening recruitment and retention through personalized student pathways, and investing in faculty and staff development.

Evans has also been a visible and active presence on campus and in the community—hosting faculty and staff gatherings, supporting student events, and building relationships with civic and church leaders across Cleveland County and beyond. His emphasis on collaboration and shared accountability has fostered a renewed sense of community and belonging among employees, alumni, and students alike.

Evans and his wife, Dr. Brittany Evans, a �۶�ֱ�� alumna and visiting assistant professor in the College of Education, are deeply engaged in the University’s life and ministry. The couple enjoys attending campus events, spending time outdoors, riding motorcycles, and mentoring students and young professionals in faith and leadership.

Johnson has over 10 years of leadership experience that includes developing and implementing comprehensive, data-informed student success strategies. He comes to GWU from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, where he served as assistant director of Student Support Systems and Career Readiness. He will begin his new position at �۶�ֱ�� on Nov. 3.

Waters stated, “Dr. Kenneth Johnson brings a wealth of experience and a genuine heart for students to the role of leading the Division of Student Success. From our very first conversation, it was clear that he embraces �۶�ֱ�� University’s mission and is deeply committed to meeting students where they are. Dr. Johnson shared that he values every student interaction and desires to create a strong sense of belonging across our campus community. I am excited to welcome Dr. Johnson and look forward to the positive impact his leadership will bring to our students and the University.”

Johnson has contributed to student-centered programming and services at Weber since 2019. In his most recent role, he created a framework that combined academic support and career development across software platforms like Starfish, leading to a 30% boost in student engagement. He introduced a hands-on learning tool that offered job simulations and skill-building opportunities to prepare students for the workforce. He also launched a peer mentoring program focused on personal and professional growth to encourage peer-to-peer support.

While implementing these initiatives, Johnson collaborated with faculty to design impactful experiential learning opportunities—such as internships, co-ops, and service-learning projects—to enrich student learning, engagement, and overall development. He developed and led workshops in collaboration with Student Support Services to foster essential success skills and provide targeted support for

underrepresented student populations.

Johnson noted, “I am deeply honored to join the �۶�ֱ�� University community. From my first interactions, I was struck by the strong sense of purpose and faith that guides this institution. �۶�ֱ��’s commitment to developing the whole student in mind, body, and spirit aligns perfectly with my own philosophy of education. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across campus to build upon that legacy and empower students to achieve their fullest potential.”

Previously, Johnson served as executive director of Moore Career College in Baton Rouge, La. There, he spearheaded strategic initiatives that dramatically improved student persistence, resulting in a 94% increase in retention rates and a 171% increase in admission rates.

Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in organizational management from Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa. He received his Master of Education in higher education leadership from Weber, and completed his Doctor of Education in student affairs and administration and leadership at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Outside of his professional life, Johnson enjoys spending time with his wife and family. Together, they are grateful for the opportunity to join the �۶�ֱ�� community and look forward to becoming active members of the Boiling Springs area.

Candidates to Visit Campus Nov. 4–7 for Interviews and Public Forums in Tucker Student Center

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The �۶�ֱ�� Presidential Search Committee has announced that three finalists for the University’s 14th President will visit campus during the first week of November. Each candidate will participate in interviews with faculty, staff and students, as well as take part in a forum that is open to the public.

Rev. Dr. Lamont Littlejohn

Chairman of the Presidential Search Committee the Rev. Dr. Lamont Littlejohn thanked committee members for their diligent work and emphasized, “As we approach this important moment in the life of �۶�ֱ��, I invite you to join us in prayer—asking for wisdom, clarity, and unity as we seek the leader God has prepared to shepherd this University into its next season of growth and service.”

The public gatherings will provide an opportunity for the community and friends to hear directly from each candidate. They will share their vision and calling to serve �۶�ֱ�� and discuss what the University’s next five years could look like under their leadership.

The public forums will be held in Tucker Student Center’s Faith Hall.
