Campus Events Focus on Education, Advocacy, and Solidarity with Survivors

�۶�ֱ�� University’s Office of Student Development will recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout April with a series of educational programs and awareness events. For 25 years, Sexual Assault Awareness Month has united survivors, advocates, and communities in a shared commitment to ending sexual assault, abuse, and harassment through education, prevention, and support.

Vice President of Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose, who also serves as the University’s interim Title IX coordinator, emphasized the importance of intentionally observing the month and engaging the campus community in meaningful ways.

“Honoring Sexual Assault Awareness Month means choosing to see, to listen, and to act—because every voice matters, every story deserves dignity, and every community has a responsibility to create a culture of respect, consent, and accountability,” Villarose emphasized.

Building on this commitment, �۶�ֱ�� will host a variety of programs and initiatives this mont aimed at fostering awareness, education, and open dialogue around sexual violence, prevention efforts, and available campus resources.

Monthlong Book Display at Dover Library

�۶�ֱ��’s Dover Library will host a book display featuring books and educational resources focused on sexual violence awareness, prevention, consent, and survivor support. This collection is intended to encourage learning, reflection, and informed dialogue across the campus community. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to visit the display throughout the month to explore these important topics and access available resources.

Held the first Wednesday in April, Start by Believing Day provides an opportunity for communities to unify with a single voice for survivors. “We hear you, we support you, and we will start by believing.”

Denim Day originated in response to a widely criticized Italian court decision in the 1990s that raised serious concerns about the treatment and rights of victims. Women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in solidarity the following day, helping to spark a movement that is now recognized globally and supported by organizations such as Peace Over Violence.

The updated look offers a distinctive way for the GWU community to show its spirit across the Carolinas.

Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Shannon Hovis said the specialty plate offers both a visual celebration of Bulldog pride and a tangible benefit to the University. “Seeing our new logo on the �۶�ֱ�� specialty license plate is a point of pride for our entire Bulldog family,” she noted. “Even more meaningful is that every plate purchased directly supports the �۶�ֱ�� Annual Fund. Glow Run 5K Generates Contribution to Assist Students with Emergency Financial Needs

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—In a show of campus generosity and community spirit, the 2027 cohort of the Gardner‑Webb University Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program organized a fundraising event that helped support fellow students in financial need. They raised $2,648.85 and presented the donation to the Bulldog Cares Fund during a recent basketball game. This fund—a joint venture led by Student Development, Student Success, and Financial Planning—seeks to assist �۶�ֱ�� students by providing financial support intended to prevent them from leaving the University for emergency financial reasons.

The PA students generated the donation by sponsoring a Glow Run 5K on Nov. 15, 2025. Participants included students, friends and supporters who lit up the night for an evening of fitness, fun, and community spirit. The group—decked out in neon colors, glow sticks, and LED accessories— transformed the course into a moving celebration, creating an atmosphere that was equal parts athletic and festive. The running course traversed through the campus of Gardner Webb University and had many “glow” items along the way.

“The Glow Run 5K wasn’t just about crossing the finish line—it was about connection and momentum,” observed Allison Shamblin, director of Didactic Education in the Department of PA Studies. “From the pulsing music at the start line to the cheers echoing along the route, runners and walkers of all paces were encouraged at every step of the way. The event showcased the 2027 cohort’s dedication to teamwork, wellness, and creativity, turning a traditional 5K into a memorable nighttime experience.”

Shamblin added, “By the end of the night, glowing smiles matched the glowing gear as participants celebrated a successful event filled with energy and enthusiasm. The Glow Run 5K stood out as a highlight of the season, reflecting the passion and leadership of the PA Class of 2027 and leaving the community excited for what they’ll organize next.”

Four Dedicated Employees Retire After Decades of Service to �۶�ֱ��

Their Contributions to the Campus Community Have Shaped Generations of Students

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Four longtime employees are retiring from �۶�ֱ�� University after the Christmas holidays. Their dedicated service has impacted students through academics, Christian Life and Service, and ensuring a safe, attractive environment for learning and community.

Retiring on Dec. 31

Susan Manahan, Assistant Professor of Biology, 31 years

During her tenure at �۶�ֱ��, Manahan has championed scientific exploration and community service. After graduating with degrees in microbiology and nutrition from Penn State University, Manahan’s first job was working as a quality control technician for Bachman Pretzel Company in Reading, Pa. She joined the GWU faculty shortly after obtaining her master’s degree in biology from UNC-Charlotte.

Manahan’s dedication to students extended beyond the classroom. A highlight of her career has been mentoring undergraduates in their independent research and helping them achieve their goals. Her students have pursued various professions in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, and wildlife biology. Manahan has been granted the rank of Faculty Emeritus status upon her retirement. Dr. Robert Canoy, Professor of Historical Theology, 25 years

Canoy joined the School of Divinity faculty in 2000 and has regularly led study tours to Israel, Egypt, Greece, and Turkey. His primary area of research is New Testament theology. He is the author “Atonement in the Apocalypse: An Expose of the Defeat of Evil.” Before joining the faculty of the School of Divinity, Canoy was pastor of First Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C. His academic career includes teaching at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Mo. He has also served as pastor, interim pastor, and guest teacher in churches across North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Iowa, and Missouri. He is married to Cynthia and they are the parents of two adult sons. His hobbies include bicycling, basketball, baseball, hunting, woodworking, and traveling. Read more here.

Teresa Davis, Administrative Assistant for Office of Christian Life and Service, 22 years

Davis began working at �۶�ֱ�� in 2003 in the Office of Christian Life and Service/Campus Ministries. She enjoyed working with and around college students and ministering to them during these formative years. She had the opportunity to lead mission trips for college students and has traveled in the states as well as over six countries. She has been involved in ministry with her husband, Eric, for 46 years, and is the founder of Fragrance Ministries, which exists to encourage and empower women to know Jesus Christ personally.

Retiring on Jan. 5

David Wacaster, Director of Facilities and Maintenance, 27 years

Wacaster has a Bachelor of Science degree from �۶�ֱ�� and joined the University in 1998 as a patrol officer. He was captain of University Police when he was tapped to be the director of Environmental and Occupational Safety at GWU. In 2020, he became the director of Operations for Facilities and Maintenance. Before coming to �۶�ֱ��, Wacaster had served six years with the Shelby Police Department, where he held the positions of patrol officer, field training officer, SWAT Team member, and detective. He is married to Tonya, who received her bachelor’s and master’s in nursing from �۶�ֱ��. His daughters also graduated from GWU. Kaylee earned a sports management degree and is a fifth-grade teacher at Township Three Elementary. Jenna graduated with an education degree and teaches second grade at Springmore Elementary. They both played softball at �۶�ֱ�� and were recognized as Big South All Conference players. Kaylee holds six career hitting records for the Bulldogs. Jenna is married to Caleb Webber and they have a son named Riggs. When he’s not at GWU, Wacaster likes to ride the trails in West Virginia while running his off-road touring business. He also enjoys spending time with family and spoiling Riggs.

John R. Dover Sr. to Receive �۶�ֱ��’s Founders Medal for Generations of Support

The Dovers’ Commitment Through Grants and Scholarships has Shaped the University and Cleveland County

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Each year, �۶�ֱ�� presents the Founders Medal in recognition of significant and lasting contributions to the University. Since its founding in 1905, �۶�ֱ�� has benefited from visionary leaders committed to establishing an institution for Christian higher education in the foothills of North Carolina.

Among those early and ardent supporters is the family of John Randolph Dover Sr. The father of 10 children, Dover passed down to his family a legacy built on faith, hard work, and education. As a tribute to his lasting influence, Dover will receive the Founders Medal at the Festival of Lights Dinner on Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. Accepting the award on behalf of the family will be his grandson, Charles D. Chamberlain.

Dover started Ella Mill in Cleveland County in 1907. He sold that first plant in 1917, then built Dover Mill in west Shelby in 1923. This was the real beginning of what later became Dover Textiles. Dover was not only a successful industrialist—he had a vision for building communities that valued the well-being of those who were a part of them. He understood the value of education and believed it was essential for the prosperity of his employees and their families. Each mill village had schools and churches, of which his own children and family attended.

Dover Sr. died in 1931, leaving management of the company to two of his sons: John R. “Jack” Dover Jr. and Charles I. Dover. Under their leadership, Dover Textiles became the largest employer in Cleveland County with nearly 3,000 people for many years. Annual sales peaked at around $200 million. Dover Textiles was known for its novelty or specialty operations, which included woven, knitted and tricot fabrics, and spun yarns. The family industry was sold in 1984.

As the company grew, the Dover family supported many projects at �۶�ֱ�� University and around Cleveland County. The two brothers served on the GWU Board of Trustees for many years and established the Dover Foundation in 1944 for the primary purpose of supporting �۶�ֱ��. In the early 1950s, they donated $175,000 to build the first home of the John R. Dover Sr. library, which is now known as Craig Hall. Afterward, they continued to donate and raise money to purchase books for the library.

Other buildings and structures on the �۶�ֱ�� campus are constant reminders of the family’s legacy of support: the Charles I. Dover Campus Center, the John R. Dover Jr. Chapel, and the Kathleen Dover Theatre, named for Charles’ wife. The Dovers’ support of educational and human service organizations is also evident across Cleveland County, with the Dover Foundation YMCA and the Kathleen Dover Hamrick Hospice House.

Today, The Dover Foundation is committed to supporting nonprofit organizations that have the potential to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the well-being of Cleveland County residents. The foundation also awards a total of 12 scholarships each year to students who attend high school within the Cleveland County Schools system. Of the 12 awarded each year, four are designated for seniors who have been accepted at �۶�ֱ�� University.

Award-Winning Documentary by �۶�ֱ�� Students to Air Locally on C19 TV

‘Shaping the Old North State’ Explores the Lasting Influence of O. Max and Fay Webb Gardner on the University and Beyond

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—“Shaping the Old North State,” a documentary created by �۶�ֱ�� University students, will be featured locally on Spectrum Cable C19 TV on Sunday, Nov. 23, through Saturday, Nov. 29. Each day, the film will air at 9:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. A story that captures the extraordinary legacy of Cleveland County through the lens of O. Max Gardner and Fay Webb Gardner, the production won the Founder’s Choice Award presented at the 26th Annual Real to Reel International Film Festival.

The film traces the Gardners influence far beyond politics and into the present day. They helped reshape not just North Carolina, but the nation. O. Max Gardner served as governor of North Carolina from 1929-1933. Despite living in Raleigh, N.C., and Washington, D.C., the Gardners never forgot their hometown of Shelby, N.C., and what was then a junior college in Boiling Springs. Their devotion and financial support of the college was recognized in 1942, when the trustees voted to name the school, �۶�ֱ��, after them.

Recent GWU graduate Carson Willoughby served as director, cinematographer and editor and was assisted by GWU students, Dakota Hawxwell, camera operator and editor, and Jonathan Holbrook, camera operator. The film was produced through �۶�ֱ��’s Department of Communication, Art & Design in a documentary class taught by the film’s executive producers: Jessica Maloney, assistant professor of photography and design, and Dr. Chris Nelson, professor of theatre arts.

“I’m incredibly proud of Carson, Dakota, and Jonathan!” Maloney praised. “I’m so glad our documentary class was able to provide the time and space for them to explore the history of our university’s namesakes and bring their stories to life through film. Their achievement reflects the creativity, innovation, and collaborative spirit we strive to foster in the Communication, Art & Design department.”

The project also features contributions from GWU faculty and staff, including Dr. Natalie Bishop, dean of the GWU Library, Dr. Tim Vanderburg, professor of history, and voice talent from Jeff Powell, instructor of communication studies and general manager of WGWG Radio.

Robert ‘Navy Bob’ Roncska Honors the Sacrifices of Veterans and Inspires Service to Others

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Robert “Navy Bob” Roncska, who served in the Nuclear Navy, the White House and in health care, was the guest speaker for �۶�ֱ�� University’s Veterans Day Service on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in Tucker Student Center. He delivered a tribute to veterans and their families, emphasizing that “freedom is not free—it is paid for by courage, sacrifice, and love.”

The �۶�ֱ�� ROTC presented the colors to begin the service. The national anthem was performed by Dr. Robert Harrelson, a retired senior master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and a �۶�ֱ�� adjunct voice faculty member.

�۶�ֱ�� President Nate Evans gave the welcome and invocation. “As a University community, we are proud to stand with our veterans, including students, alumni, faculty, staff, and neighbors whose service and sacrifice continue to inspire us,” Evans declared. “To each veteran here, and to all who have served, we say, ‘Thank you. Your example reminds us what it means to live with purpose, integrity and devotion—devotion to something greater than ourselves.’”

Roncska recognized the sacrifices veterans and their families are called to make, such as missed birthdays and times of anxious waiting. As a retired Navy leader who served 28 years in the nuclear submarine force, he highlighted the sacrifices of submariners, noting that during World War II, the submarine force lost 52 vessels and 3,500 men. “So many never came home,” he reflected. “They gave their one and only life so that they we could live ours in freedom. When you think about that kind of sacrifice, the sheer cost of liberty, it makes you pause and realize just how precious this life truly is.”

Then, Roncska shared that the odds of being born are “one in 400 trillion.” Considering, the odds of winning the lottery are one in 292 million, he challenged the audience: “You already hit the jackpot. What are you doing with your winnings?” Roncska continued, “Whose life will you touch with your presence? Whose pain will you ease with your experience? Whose day will you change with your compassion?”

The speech also included a personal story of helping a sailor and his wife overcome bureaucratic obstacles to start a family. “That was my greatest accomplishment in life,” Roncska said, after receiving a photo of their daughter Caroline and a note that read, “You and God are the only reasons why my sweet Caroline is here.”

Quoting Mr. Rogers—“Love and success, always in that order”—Roncska emphasized that true leadership is rooted in service. “Whether you’re leading a team, a classroom, or a family, success comes when we care for one another,” he said. “Our legacy isn’t what we’ve done for ourselves, but what we have done for others. As I told the students earlier this morning, at �۶�ֱ�� you get so much more than an education. You get a lesson in life—of service to others, which is the greatest gift you could ever have gotten.”

The program closed with �۶�ֱ�� senior Lindy Bryson singing America the Beautiful, and a prayer by Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service Dr. Josh Parrott.

Dean of �۶�ֱ��’s Dover Library Appointed to Statewide Leadership Role

Dr. Natalie Bishop will Help Shape Professional Development Training for North Carolina’s Library Cooperative

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Dr. Natalie Bishop, dean of �۶�ֱ�� University’s Dover Library, has been named to an advisory committee for NC LIVE, the statewide library cooperative. Her appointment was made by A. Hope Williams, president of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU).

Williams described the significance of Bishop’s assignment. “NC LIVE is an important resource to the 36 independent colleges and universities in North Carolina, and the independent sector serves as an important partner in the overall state effort. In that vein, NCICU has appointees to the committees that carry out the major work of NC LIVE.”

As a member library with NC LIVE, �۶�ֱ�� has access to over 80 databases. Content includes an online collection of 1.8 billion full-text articles, eBooks, streaming videos, digitized newspapers, language learning tools, and more. Additionally, NC LIVE provides authentication, discovery and website services to libraries to improve access to information.

Bishop is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Continuing Education and Training Advisory Committee (CETAC). She will offer input and feedback on the planning and assessment processes related to NC LIVE’s professional development program, such as in-person training sessions, and online tutorials and webinars. The CETAC assists the NC Live Librarians Council by presenting it with recommendations and priorities for all professional development opportunities offered by NC LIVE.

“Professional development for librarians and faculty is something I’m genuinely passionate about—and being able to help guide and support colleagues across the region through the CETAC team is exciting,” Bishop asserted. “Providing high-quality, free development opportunities is essential if we want to think creatively, problem-solve effectively, and keep pushing innovation in our field. I’m really looking forward to being part of that work.”

In Celebration of University’s 120 Years, Campus Invited to Give Back and Pray for Community

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�۶�ֱ�� University will unite the campus community for a Week of Giving, Service, and Prayer from Nov. 17-21. The initiative celebrates three core expressions of faith—generosity, service, and prayer—that have defined the University for 120 years.

Partnering with United Way, the University will honor its legacy of impact by supporting urgent needs, serving with compassion, and lifting one another in prayer. The goal is to strengthen the community and continue a tradition of leading with heart, hands, and hope.

Interim GWU President Nate Evans stated, “�۶�ֱ�� University has long been an indispensable partner in the life of this region, standing alongside our communities in times of need, service, and hope. During this Week of Giving, Service, and Prayer, we are mobilizing as One Webb to make a concerted and meaningful impact. When we unite in generosity, serve with purpose, and lift one another in prayer, we honor our 120-year legacy not with words but with action.”

Giving Through United Way

During the Week of Giving, Service, and Prayer, faculty and staff are encouraged to contribute to United Way, which helps feed the hungry, support education, improve health, and provide shelter in the local region. The University’s goal is 50% campus participation. Gifts can be made as one-time contributions or through payroll deduction. Learn more about giving to United Way, here.

Serving with Hands—120 Minutes of Impact

�۶�ֱ�� is partnering with United Way and community organizations across the region to complete 120 combined hours of service. Opportunities will be available on and off campus. View some suggestions from the Office of Christian Life and Service here.

Praying with Hope—120 Voices United in Faith

Prayer strengthens the hands that serve and inspires the generosity that gives—it’s the foundation that supports it all.

In addition to two moments of campus worship and prayer, the campus will receive daily 30-second reflections—simple prompts to pause, breathe, and reconnect with God as you move through your day of service and generosity.

Campus Prayer Gatherings

Prayer Service – Nov. 17 at noon, Dover Chapel.
Time of Prayer – Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m., The Quad flagpole.
