Classmates From the 1960s Gather at the Snack Shop to Reminisce, Honor Friendships, and Revisit the Campus Where Their Stories Began

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擲eated around a table in the Snack Shop鈥攁 restaurant they frequented in the 1960s when they were in school鈥攁 group of devoted 蜜豆直播 alumni reminisced about their college days, back when the University was a two-year school. They shared huge smiles, stories of escapades, and much laughter. There were also some solemn moments as they remembered cherished friends who are no longer with them. This informal gathering of roommates and classmates from 1962-1964 has been an annual event for about 25 years.

Since many of them are now in the 80s, they treasure these times even more. Some had planned to attend this year, but health reasons kept them away. After lunch, several toured the campus with Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Shannon Hovis and three current GWU students. They were also joined by Bulldog Club Director William Glover and Advancement Officer Kimery Crowder.

victory.

Three of the men in attendance were members of the 1963 men鈥檚 basketball team that brought home the University鈥檚 first-ever championship victory from the Western Carolinas Junior College Conference Tournament. Ronnie 鈥淏ones鈥 Robinson, Larry V. Clark, and Jesse David Webster played on the team. For his contributions to the winning season, Robinson was inducted into the 蜜豆直播 Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.

Robinson, of Belmont, N.C., said he had attended most every reunion and enjoyed catching up with his friends and hearing about what was going on in their lives. 鈥淲e just had a wonderful bunch of guys,鈥 he observed. 鈥淲e banded together.鈥

He met his wife, Betsy Thompson Robinson, 鈥64, at 蜜豆直播. Their romance was the talk of campus, because she was a cheerleader. The relationship that began on campus became a lifetime commitment. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been married 60 years,鈥 Robinson related.

Emily Curtis Kolb, of Sumter, S.C., and Billie Bennett, of Columbia, S.C., also came for the reunion. The two women have been close since childhood. Bennett came to 蜜豆直播 first and encouraged her friend to follow. Sometime after Kolb鈥檚 arrival to campus, they met Harry Waters, of Rutherfordton, N.C., who accompanied Kolb to this year鈥檚 reunion.

Waters share a laugh after visiting the campus bookstore.

That first meeting, which was over 60 years ago, also took place in the Snack Shop. Waters noticed the two young women sitting on a bench and asked if anyone knew them and nobody did. 鈥淚 said, 鈥榃ell, I鈥檓 going to go make myself known to them,鈥欌 Waters shared. 鈥淚 walked up and said, 鈥楬ello,鈥 my name is Harry Waters,鈥 and Billie said my name is Billie Brown,鈥 and I looked at Emily and she said, 鈥楳y name is Emily Curtis and I鈥檓 from Sumter, South Carolina,鈥 and I said, 鈥榃ould you marry me?鈥 She hasn鈥檛 said, 鈥榶es,鈥 yet.鈥

Although they never married each other, they stayed in touch over the years and even dated one other time. Recently, when Waters found out that Kolb was single again, they started dating for the third time. Waters may get his answer soon.

There were many other stories shared around the table at lunch and on the campus tour. They talked about bending the curfew rules of the 鈥60s, how much times have changed, and getting older. They marveled at the years gone by and the lasting bonds of friendship. 鈥淲e鈥檙e just like brothers and sisters,鈥 noted Pat Wells, 鈥63, of Gaffney, S.C. She helps coordinate the event each year. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a 蜜豆直播 feeling, a closeness. We were there two years together. We had three meals a day together. We鈥檙e close, and lots of people will tell you that was the best two years of their life.鈥

蜜豆直播 students joined the campus tour to share their experiences and hear about GW in the 1960s.

Founders Medal to Dr. Shirley P. Toney with her son, Brian Toney.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斺淲hen you drink the water, don’t forget who dug the well,” these wise words spoken by Dr. Shirley P. Toney about those nursing pioneers before her also summarize the purpose of 蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 Founders Day Celebration. Each year, on the Thursday following Thanksgiving break, 蜜豆直播’s campus, alumni, and friends recognize and pay tribute to those who played formative roles in the University鈥檚 119-year development from a high school to a nationally-recognized university and leader in Christian higher education.

Highlighting this year鈥檚 observance on Dec. 5 was the presentation of two Founders Medals to Dr. Shirley Putnam Toney, dean emerita and professor emerita of the School of Nursing, and the Royster family, extending from Dr. S.S. Royster to David W. Royster III.

As he presented the awards, 蜜豆直播 President Dr. William M. Downs noted, 鈥淲e are here to recognize some towering figures from our institution鈥檚 past and present. People who have clearly made a positive and lasting difference in the journey that has led us to today鈥檚 蜜豆直播.鈥

Toney, Downs asserted, 鈥渋nspired, trained, and impacted literally thousands of nurses and nurse educators throughout the Carolinas and beyond. She provided outstanding leadership and vision for what is today鈥檚 Hunt School of Nursing, and by extension she elevated the quality of patient care in our community and throughout our region.鈥

鈥淲hen you drink the water, don鈥檛 forget who dug the well.鈥

Dr. Shirley P. Toney, Founders Medal Recipient

With a career spanning more than half a century, Toney has dedicated her life to advancing nursing education and healthcare. After receiving the Founders Day Medal from Downs and Board of Trustees Chair Gary Smith, Toney pointed out that her accomplishments were the result of many who offered support and encouragement. She recognized Glennie Beam, who was also part of the first nursing faculty. Toney, Beam and the late Grace Lee were the first three instructors for the Associate Degree in Nursing (AND) program in 1965.

As a trailblazer in nursing education, Toney was instrumental in shaping the ADN program鈥檚 early curriculum. She assumed the role of program administrator in 1978 and later the position of founding dean of the School of Nursing, a role that cemented her legacy as a pioneer in the field. In 1982, she conducted a feasibility study for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, specifically designed for registered nurses (RNs) seeking to advance their education.

Her vision for the program became a reality, and the BSN program quickly gained a strong reputation. She also led three separate feasibility studies to establish a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program, which officially launched in 2001. Under her guidance, 蜜豆直播鈥檚 nursing programs gained full accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), reinforcing the University鈥檚 commitment to high academic standards and quality healthcare education. Read more about Toney鈥檚 accomplishments here.

In introducing the second recipients of the Founders Medal, Downs observed, 鈥淢ultiple generations of the Royster family have been passionate and tireless supporters of 蜜豆直播 for decades. The common thread that runs across the generations is that the Roysters have given not only of their means, but of their time, of their vision, and of their leadership in efforts to help others鈥n efforts to strengthen not just this institution but also to enhance so many aspects of the Cleveland County community and the quality of life that we enjoy here.鈥

蜜豆直播 President Dr. William M. Downs congratulates
David Royster III.

During his remarks, Downs referenced a 1973 Joint Resolution of the North Carolina General Assembly issued shortly after David W. Royster had passed away. The resolution notes that Mr. Royster had served on the Board of Trustees of 蜜豆直播 College, and it then goes on to describe Royster as, 鈥渒ind and courteous, witty and good-humored, straightforward and sincere, according to all a fair opportunity to present their viewpoint but reserving to himself the right to his own independent convictions, which he would express with firmness and clarity of language; notwithstanding his refusal to yield on matters of principle, he was ever gentlemanly and courteous of manner, evoking the admiration and affection of all those fortunate enough to know him.鈥

After reading the resolution, Downs concluded, 鈥淵ou know, genes are powerful. Anybody who knows this generation of Roysters will be quick to affirm those same admirable qualities continue to exist in abundance鈥ind and courteous, witty and good-humored, straightforward and sincere鈥rincipled and admired by all.鈥

David Royster III accepted the award on behalf of his family. In his speech, he thanked his wife, Sally, and his family for their support and also paid tribute to the legacy of his great-grandfather, Dr. S.S. Royster, grandfather, David Royster Sr., and father, David Royster Jr.

The former Royster Memorial Hospital (now Royster Residence Hall) was named for Dr. S.S. Royster, who provided the majority of the funding for building the hospital in Boiling Springs, which was for the college and the community. It was staffed by the Drs. W. Wyan and H. Gene Washburn, and Dr. Sam J. Crawley. Royster earmarked $13,000 towards the project but passed away before the project began. His son, David Sr., honored his father鈥檚 wishes. Later, David Sr. would serve a term on the 蜜豆直播 Board of Trustees from 1958-1959. Eventually, David W. Royster III would serve on the Board of Trustees from 2015-2023 and chair the search that brought Downs as GWU鈥檚 13th president.

The celebration also featured a ceremony to place a historical marker at Bost Gymnasium and a Founders Day exhibit in the gym. The marker honors the building named for Alonzo 鈥淟on鈥 C. Bost, founder of Bost鈥檚 Bread bakeries, who donated the funds for the gymnasium in memory of his daughter Jean Bost Gardner. Lon was an enterprising young man who got his start in the baking industry around 1903. By 1909, he bought a caf茅 in Shelby, where he baked cake, pies and bread and delivered his goods first by bicycle and then by horse and wagon. Bost鈥檚 success was driven not only by his business acumen but also by his adaptability to an ever-changing industrialized market. Beyond his business achievements, Lon was known for his civic contributions. He supported local education and community development, leaving a legacy of philanthropy.

Bost Gym opened its doors to roaring crowds on Nov. 23, 1957, as both the 蜜豆直播 men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball teams beat the teams of Howard Business College. For decades, Bost Gym was the. Heart of campus athletics, hosting basketball games, volleyball matches, and various intramural sports.

This Year鈥檚 Event Honors Nursing Pioneer Dr. Shirley P. Toney and Legacy of the Dr. S.S. Royster Family; Bost Gymnasium Receives Historical Marker

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擮n Dec. 2, 1905, the first Boiling Springs High School Board of Trustees signed the school鈥檚 official charter. Through their support and the dedication of other community, state and religious leaders, the school grew in size and reputation. In 1942, the institution was renamed 蜜豆直播, in recognition of its ardent supporters, former North Carolina Gov. O. Max Gardner and his wife, Faye Webb Gardner.

Dr. Shirley P. Toney

Now 119 years later, the small junior college has evolved into a nationally-recognized university and leader in Christian higher education. Those who helped build GWU into what it is today gave generously of their time, talents and critical financial support. Each year, on the Thursday following Thanksgiving break, the 蜜豆直播 campus, alumni and friends celebrate Founders Day to honor the names and legacies of the persons and groups who played formative roles in the University鈥檚 development.

This year鈥檚 observance of Founders Day falls on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024. The day is highlighted by the presentation of two Founders Medals to Dr. Shirley Putnam Toney, dean emerita and professor emerita of the School of Nursing, and the Royster family, extending from Dr. S.S. Royster to David W. Royster III.

David Royster

蜜豆直播 President Dr. William M. Downs underscores the significance of this annual celebration, 鈥淥ur University鈥檚 history is filled with towering figures who have been so instrumental in shaping today鈥檚 institution, and we dedicate Founders Day to honoring them and their legacies. These have been people of vision, people of faith, and people resolute in their commitment to building and sustaining one of the greatest places in America to go if you want a Christian higher education. I am delighted that this year we will have Dr. Toney along with David and Sally Royster on campus to receive our profound gratitude and to accept the Founders Medals.鈥

The celebration also features a ceremony to place a historical marker at Bost Gymnasium, a Founders Day exhibit in the gym, and the dinner and awards presentation; all open to the public. Following dinner, guests are invited to attend the annual Festival of Lights Christmas celebration, which is a ticketed event this year.

With a career spanning more than half a century, Toney has dedicated her life to advancing nursing education and healthcare. She joined 蜜豆直播 when it was a junior college in 1965 as the first instructor in its newly established Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program. As a trailblazer in nursing education, Toney was instrumental in shaping the ADN program鈥檚 early curriculum. BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擣or the first time since joining the Big South Conference, the 蜜豆直播 (12-3-3) men’s soccer team has been crowned tournament champions after taking down No. 22 High Point (11-4-2) by the final of 2-1 on Saturday (Nov. 16) evening inside Vert Stadium.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs now await their fate for the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament as the Big South Conference Automatic Qualifier. The Selection Show is today, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. A watch party will begin at 12:25 p.m. in Tucker Student Center.

In an evenly contested match, graduate forward found the back of the net in the 65th minute, scoring what proved to be the game-winner for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

On paper, High Point controlled the stats, recording a 12-10 advantage on shots, but GWU placed five shots on goal, compared to four for the Panthers. HPU also earned a 12-4 difference on corner kicks while team saves were even at 3-all.

After giving High Point its only loss of the season in conference a week ago, the Runnin’ Bulldogs came out fast to begin the first half, notching the game’s first goal less than five minutes in the game.

A perfectly placed corner kick found its way into the box before junior defender collected a ricocheted shot off the woodwork and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers looked poised to knot the score at 1-1 at the 15:13 mark, but junior keeper came up with one of his three saves while preserving the 蜜豆直播 lead. GWU posted two more shots on goal over the remainder of the half, but neither could beat the High Point goalie as the Runnin’ Bulldogs took the one score lead into the half.

After failing to score on a great look in the 46th minute, HPU’s Lukas Kamrath pushed across the equalizer in the 60th minute following a header into the lower-90 of the cage.

The score would not stay tied long as 蜜豆直播 quickly raced back down the field just over four minutes later to give the ‘Dawgs the lead once more. A deflected ball found the right boot of graduate forward , who found O’Hara for the go-ahead score.

High Point had one last look at goal at the 77:00 mark, but Horrocks came up clutch with his third and final save as the 蜜豆直播 defense milked the remainder of the clock enroute to the Big South Conference Tournament Championship.

In addition, Aden O’Hara was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player while teammates Leo Andrade, , and were named to the Big South Tournament All-Tournament Team.

Annual Award Recognizes Exceptional Contributions to the University

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擨n the same spirit as 蜜豆直播鈥檚 earliest founders, men and women throughout the institution鈥檚 119-year history have provided distinguished service and support to further its mission. For the third consecutive year since renewing GWU鈥檚 Founders Day observances, the Office of President is inviting nominations for the recipient of the 2024 Founders Medal, the University鈥檚 most prestigious honor.

Nominations will be accepted until Aug. 15 at 11:59 p.m.

The presentation of the Founders Medal is a highlight of 蜜豆直播鈥檚 annual Founders Day celebration, which recognizes the date GWU (then Boiling Springs High School) was officially chartered on Dec. 2, 1905.

鈥淥urs is a university rich in history,鈥 emphasized 蜜豆直播 President Dr. William Downs. 鈥淭he indelible imprint of those who came before us can be seen in the buildings that adorn our 225-acre campus, it can be measured by the success of the programs that attract and prepare our students, and it can be felt in our surrounding community where GWU鈥檚 impact is both positive and enduring. It is our obligation as GWU鈥檚 present stewards to take time each year and honor the exceptional contributions of those persons who helped found, nurture, and grow one of America鈥檚 finest institutions of Christian higher education. The Founders Medal does just that.鈥

Last year鈥檚 medal was presented posthumously to J.D. Huggins, the first principal of Boiling Springs High School. Huggins, who was affectionately known as 鈥淧rofessor Huggins,鈥 steadfastly lived his charge to care for the welfare, encouragement, and growth of the students. Read more here.

Receiving the inaugural Founders Medal awards in 2022 were John and Linda Godbold of Rock Hill, S.C., and the late North Carolina Governor O. Max and Fay Webb Gardner.

19th Century Historic Documents and Church Records Helpful for Genealogical and Academic Research

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 University鈥檚 Dover Library recently received a $42,000 grant from the State Library of North Carolina. The money will be used to digitize historical church records on microfilm and documents in the Cleveland County Historical Collection. The project is a joint effort of Dover Library, and the Earl Scruggs Center Museum and Broad River Genealogical Society, both in Shelby, N.C.

Natalie Bishop
Dr. Natalie Bishop

蜜豆直播鈥檚 library was one of 41 across the state selected to receive funding, which is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act. Dr. Natalie Bishop, library dean and archivist, explained that the funds will digitize fragile 19th century historical documents pertaining to the history of Cleveland County, including deed records, church records, scrapbooks, and maps housed in the collections of the GWU Archives, Earl Scruggs Center Museum, and Broad River Genealogical Society.

Through digitization, these records will be more accessible and searchable. The documents will be added to the open access Digital Commons repository at 蜜豆直播. These materials are currently inaccessible to the community due to their fragility. 鈥淭his is a collaborative project with the shared goal of making primary resources available to our community,鈥 Bishop commented. 鈥淔unding from this grant is critical due to the fragile condition and limited access of the records.鈥

Bishop noted that the digital collection is open and accessible to anyone and can be used by students in Cleveland County Schools, Cleveland Community College, and 蜜豆直播 who are researching issues pertaining to church history, agricultural economy, land deeds, post-reconstruction politics, and conditions of the rural poor. These documents will also be helpful to the Sunset Cemetery Project team in Shelby, N.C., as they work to identify unmarked graves in a once segregated area of the cemetery.

Zach Dressel

Zach Dressel, assistant director and curator of the Earl Scruggs Center Museum, remarked, 鈥淭hese resources will help create opportunities for genealogical and community history research that Cleveland County residents have shown a genuine interest in. As a local historian, I feel this work will be invaluable for our community.鈥

鈥淚n addition to the community this collection can serve, Cleveland County鈥檚 history is vital to the wider research scope of post-colonial social and economic development in our region,鈥 Bishop added.

Further widening the potential impact for digital collections of these historic materials, the Broad River Genealogical Society also publishes a quarterly periodical 鈥淓swau Huppeday,鈥 which has 49 organizational subscribers across North and South Carolina.

Bishop observed, 鈥淭he Broad River Genealogical Society heavily utilizes original primary research to provide assistance to genealogists nationwide with land grant documentation, century farm applications, and genealogical research.鈥

Digitization Timeline

Scanning will begin during fall 2024 (tentatively by October), writing metadata during spring 2025, and posting documents to Digital Commons by late spring/early summer 2025.

Accessing the collections

  • The church histories in the GWU Archives collection will be posted to the Archive鈥檚 Baptist Historical Collection in Digital Commons, available .
  • The Cleveland County documents and papers will primarily be in the Cleveland County Historical Collection owned by the County (managed by the Earl Scruggs Center Museum) and will be posted to the Cleveland County Historical Collection in Digital Commons, available .

The Program is Open to the Public and Celebrates 1971 Event Featuring Billy Graham

Will Graham

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈モ檚 Office of Christian Life and Service welcomes guest speaker Will Graham, the grandson of Billy Graham and oldest son of Franklin Graham, on March 26 at 9:30 a.m. The program, which is open to the public, is part of the University鈥檚 Dimensions series and will be held in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. Will鈥檚 visit comes more than five decades after Billy Graham visited 蜜豆直播鈥檚 campus on Feb. 23, 1971.

鈥淲e are excited to have Will Graham coming to campus, and I鈥檓 very much looking forward to hearing the message he shares with our community,鈥 stated 蜜豆直播 President Dr. William M. Downs. 鈥淭he Graham family has meant so much to this region and to evangelical Christians everywhere for such a long time, and we are indeed pleased that鈥攋ust as his grandfather did 53 years earlier鈥擶ill has chosen 蜜豆直播 as a place to come and share the good news.鈥

An ordained minister, Will has previously spoken for Dimensions at 蜜豆直播, as has his cousin, Jonathan Lotz, son of Anne Graham Lotz. Will has shared the hope of Jesus with more than 1 million people across six continents since beginning his evangelistic ministry in 2006. He serves as the executive vice president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), providing leadership to all aspects of the organization that his grandfather founded in 1950.

A photo from the 1971 蜜豆直播 yearbook of Billy Graham, right, speaking with Pat Spangler and his wife, Eloise.

When the elder Graham visited in 1971, he led a dedication service for R. Patrick Spangler Hall and a consecration service in the chapel. According to 鈥淒reaming, Daring, Doing: The Story of 蜜豆直播 University,鈥 Billy Graham addressed a crowd of 3,000 at one service. During his comments, the evangelist spoke of his admiration for 蜜豆直播 and said he had recommended the school to several students.

Spangler was recognized that day for his many years as a faithful supporter of the University. He served as chairman for the Board of Trustees and led two successful capital campaigns. He and his brother, Bud, were lead donors for the construction of Spangler Stadium, which is named for their father, Ernest Webb Spangler.

As the third generation of Grahams to proclaim the Gospel under the BGEA banner, Will has said, 鈥淚鈥檓 not trying to be the next Billy Graham; I鈥檓 just Will Graham. I have a burden in my heart to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If that鈥檚 to an arena full of people or one person on the street, I will do whatever God is calling me to do.鈥

In 2018, Will portrayed his grandfather in the Universal Studios biopic 鈥淯nbroken: Path to Redemption鈥 (about Olympian and World War II hero Louis Zamperini). Also in 2018, Will鈥檚 first book 鈥 a devotional titled 鈥淩edeemed: Devotions for a Longing Soul鈥濃 was published by Thomas Nelson, featuring stories centered on the life-changing power of a relationship with God. A DVD Bible study curriculum (and accompanying book) based on 鈥淩edeemed鈥 was released in May 2019.

Auxiliary aids will be made available to persons with disabilities upon request 10 working days prior to the event.  Please call 704-406-4270 or email disabilityservices@gardner-webb.edu with your request.

J.D. Huggins Recognized Posthumously with Founders Medal

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 University celebrated Founders Day on Nov. 30 by honoring the names and legacies of the persons and groups who played formative roles in the University鈥檚 development. The day of celebration was highlighted by the posthumous presentation of this year鈥檚 Founders Medal to J.D. Huggins, the first principal of Boiling Springs High School. Huggins, who was affectionately known as 鈥淧rofessor Huggins,鈥 steadfastly lived his charge to care for the welfare, encouragement, and growth of the students.

Teresa Hamrick Huggins accepted the award on behalf of the Huggins family. Also attending the medal presentation was Rachel 鈥淕in-G鈥 Hedrick Edwards, the granddaughter of J.D. Huggins. Teresa Huggins, a 1962 alumna of GWU, is also a member of the Board of Trustees. Her late husband, Sonny, was also J.D. Huggins鈥 grandson.

Vice President of Advancement Nate Evans speaks with Teresa
Huggins, right, and Rachel “Gin-G” Hedrick Edwards at the Founders
Day Dinner and Medal Award Ceremony.

After presenting a brief biography of Huggins, 蜜豆直播 President Dr. William M. Downs, summarized his impact, 鈥淛.D. dedicated his entire professional career to leading and serving our institution. In the classroom, he was known for being kind but firm. His desire was to see all students be successful and achieve their goals. Throughout his career he personally mentored countless students and encouraged them to follow their dreams. Huggins鈥 desire to build a community of learning and service at the school had an impact that extended across our region.鈥

Downs affirmed, 鈥淭he effect J.D. Huggins had on 蜜豆直播 University remains evident today. The granite arch that is still a part of our campus today has the words Pro Deo et Humanitate inscribed on it, the original motto of Boiling Springs High School from 1905. In the conference room of Webb Hall, a portrait of J.D. hangs on the wall. For us, it is a reminder of the vision, values and dedication of those who came before us. It underscores the importance of pausing each year on Founders Day to remind ourselves that we are stewards of an impressive and distinctive historical legacy. We do stand in awe of those who came before us.鈥

Accepting the Founders Medal, Teresa Huggins, talked about going through family memorabilia and looking at what others had said about Professor Huggins, 鈥淗e was praised for his love and interest in students. One of his peers said, 鈥楶rofessor Huggins comes near of being like Christ than any man I鈥檝e ever seen. He never boasts. He never makes a claim of honor for himself. He鈥檚 always the same, a good, patient, humble man.鈥欌

The family members of Seaton Allen Washburn, who gave the Washburn Building, which served as 蜜豆直播’s first library.
President Dr. William M. Downs speaks during
the historical marker ceremony at the
Washburn House.

Earlier in the day another founding family was recognized in a ceremony to place a historical marker at the Washburn House. Located at the corner of Huggins Street and West Branch Avenue, the Washburn House served as the first free-standing library on campus. Boiling Springs Baptist Church donated the land, and the Washburn family of Shelby provided monetary donations. The building was erected in 1940 and was dedicated during the 1943 commencement at which former Gov. O. Max Gardner was present. North Carolina鈥檚 Governor at that time, Joseph Broughton, was also at the dedication and provided the Commencement Address. The building was dedicated by Seaton Allen Washburn in memory of his wife, Mintie Hamrick Washburn, and his two daughters, Sarah Washburn and Mae Washburn McMurry. Each had passed prior to the dedication of the library.

Before Downs unveiled the marker with the help of Board of Trustees Chair Gary Smith, he stated, 鈥淏y placing this historical marker here today, we recognize the indelible impact that Seaton Allen Washburn and his family had on this University.  Through their selfless contributions, their legacy has an enduring significance for all who walk our campus.鈥

Downs continued, 鈥淭his marker is a public expression of our gratitude. Our university and our community are inspired by their generosity and we will continue to work together to sustain and build on their legacy.鈥

The Founders Day Historical Exhibit in the Dover Library Main Gallery will run through Jan. 30, 2024. University Archivist and Dean of the Library Dr. Natalie Edwards Bishop noted that they exhibit is designed to educate students, alumni, and the community on key figures who have had a lasting impact on the culture of 蜜豆直播. In addition to recognizing Huggins, the exhibit includes a special focus on founding students in GWU鈥檚 history. Bishop noted that this year the formation of the Student Government Association in 1943-1944 is highlighted. She added, 鈥淔ormed by an inaugural group of 13 young women, SGA is one of the longest running student-led organizations on our campus.鈥
