Event Features World Premiere of Commissioned Work and Piano Solo by Freshman Arturo Ayla

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 蜜豆直播 University Orchestra concert on Nov. 24 is dedicated to 1997 alumnus Peter Strickland, director of the Crest High School Chamber Orchestra. For over two decades, the two orchestras have collaborated on 30 programs of classical and contemporary works. Strickland is retiring in May 2026 from Cleveland County Schools.

A special feature of the concert will be the world premiere of a commissioned work in Strickland鈥檚 honor. Composed by award-winning musician, R. Christopher Teichler, the piece is called 鈥淗armina Cordium,鈥 鈥淭he Harmony of Hearts.鈥 The program begins at 7 p.m. in Dover Theatre. Tickets are $15 for general admission, and free for all students, GWU faculty, and staff.

Another highlight of the evening is piano soloist, Arturo Ayla, a 蜜豆直播 freshman who is currently studying piano with Dr. Bruce Moser. He has taken piano lessons for 10 years and organ lessons for three. Ayla participated in the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs (NCFMC) Music Festival from 2018-2025 and the NCFMC Concerto Competition from 2020-2024.

In 2024, Ayla participated in the International Piano Professionals Association (IPPA) Concerto Piano Competition and won a gold medal in the national round. He also plays organ for various churches in the Charlotte area. He is currently studying organ performance with Dr. Gianfranco Deluca. Ayla is the pianist with the GWU Orchestra, and sings in the Gardner Singers.

To honor Strickland’s support of the GWU orchestra program, Director of Orchestral Activities and Professor of Music Dr. Patricia Sparti contacted some of his students to send in photos and comments to include in a memory book and video. “They all said about the same thing that Mr. Strickland was the best teacher they have ever had, they loved every minute of orchestra,” Sparti acknowledged. “They said that he taught them great music, how to read music and how to play, but even more importantly taught them to be good people, kind and compassionate people and taught them how to treat others.聽He is one of our most distinguished Alumni鈥攃lass of 1997!”

Sparti continued, “For me, Mr. Strickland has always been the best of the best, both as a person and as a musician and educator.聽I love him and his family immensely.聽There are no amount of words I could say, so I will say he is a huge blessing from God, and I could have had no greater collaborator and friend by my side.聽He has sent us more GWU music students over the years than any other educator out there.”

Peter Strickland receives an award
Peter Strickland received the N.C. Western
Regional Orchestra Teacher of the Year in
2017.

Strickland has been an educator in the Cleveland County School System since graduating from 蜜豆直播. He began his career as the founding director of the Burns and Crest Middle School Orchestra programs and later established the Crest High Orchestra program in 1999, followed by the Electronic Music/Recording program in 2006. In 2024, Strickland was appointed as the manager of the newly opened Crest High School Auditorium, overseeing daily operations, event coordination, and the management of the facility.

Crest students have participated in events such as All-County, Western Regional, and All-State Orchestra, with many alumni pursuing careers in music education, performance, composition, and production. The Crest Chamber Orchestra has also contributed to the local community, performing at notable events such as the opening of the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall Exhibition and collaborating with the GWU Orchestra, the Rutherford Symphony, the Carolina Brass, as well as acclaimed fiddlers Mark and Maggie O鈥機onnor.

Strickland graduated from 蜜豆直播 with degrees in music education and composition. He remains an active composer and arranger. In 2010, he arranged Earl Scruggs鈥 bluegrass classic, 鈥淔lint Hill Special,鈥 for bluegrass band and orchestra as part of the Smithsonian鈥檚 American Roots concert series. Additionally, he has served as the clinician and conductor for all-county orchestra events across the state.

He has been recognized for his excellence in teaching, receiving the Hoyt & Anne Dover Bailey Teaching Excellence Award three times, and achieved certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2007, renewed in 2017. He was selected as N.C. Western Regional Orchestra Teacher of the Year in 2017, and Crest High School Teacher of the Year in 2025.

Four Students Selected to Participate in 85-Member Ensemble at N.C. Music Educators Conference

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擣our music majors from 蜜豆直播 University joined 85 students from across North Carolina chosen to participate in the second biennial North Carolina Intercollegiate Band (NCIB). The group performed at the 2025 North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) State Conference on Nov. 9-10 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The students rehearsed with guest conductor, Dr. Nicholas Enrico Williams, director of Bands at the University of Georgia. They presented a concert featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein, Bruce Broughton, Florence Price, David Maslanka, and Ericka Svanoe.

蜜豆直播鈥檚 National Association for Music
Education (NAfME) Chapter was also recognized as a
NCMEA Collegiate Chapter of Excellence.

Director of 蜜豆直播 University Bands Dr. Sarah Fabian nominated the students to apply and audition for the honor. 鈥淭hese students stand out as exceptional musicians and dedicated members of our ensembles,鈥 Fabian praised. 鈥淐hosen from many nominations and through outstanding auditions, they’ve earned their place among this distinguished group. Their talent, passion, and commitment to excellence make them shining examples of what it means to be both remarkable performers and inspiring leaders.鈥

蜜豆直播鈥檚 National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Chapter was also recognized as a NCMEA Collegiate Chapter of Excellence. This award recognizes the chapter for their contributions to NAfME Collegiate, their college or university, and/or their community. Awards are based on individual chapter accomplishments rather than on competition between chapters.

The 蜜豆直播 band students honored were:

  • Junior Boakye, of Kings Mountain, N.C., trumpet, senior music education major and third-year band member.
  • Anakin Booth, of Charlotte, N.C., tenor sax, freshman music education major and first-year band member.
  • David Dixon, of Goose Creek, S.C., trumpet, sophomore music education major and second-year band member.
  • Isaiah Vargas, of Forest City, N.C., trombone, freshman double major in music education and composition, fifth-year band member.

Junior Boakye

A trumpeter for 10 years, Boakye was also selected for the first NCIB in 2023. He is grateful to be chosen for the second time to play in the high-level ensemble and connect with some of the musicians he met before. 鈥淭he audition process consisted of hours of me practicing and listening to the excerpts,鈥 he described. 鈥淭hen, when I was ready, I went around all of campus to find the best recording space.鈥

Boakye was honored and excited to represent 蜜豆直播 and play in an ensemble filled with highly-skilled performers. 鈥淭his experience helped me grow as a musician and inspired me to keep pushing to get better so I can be involved in more opportunities like these, and so that I am well equipped to teach with the knowledge and experience I have gained from these opportunities,鈥 he observed.

Isaiah Vargas, third from left, poses with the other trombones in the honor band.

Vargas, who has played with 蜜豆直播 ensembles as a community member for five years, started playing trombone six years ago. Although the NCIB audition was intimidating, he stayed calm and thought of his video as just another rehearsal. 鈥淚 am incredibly excited and honored to have been selected to perform with such a prestigious ensemble,鈥 he stated. 鈥淭he experience was amazing鈥攂eing around other talented collegiate musicians and being able to experience the joy of making music with them was awesome. It really hit home when the guest clinician told us to really take it all in, as there will never be a point where the same musicians will be under the same roof for this kind of ensemble again. I spent a lot of time getting to know the people around me and sharing stories about our experiences with music.鈥

Anakin
Anakin Booth

The first instrument Vargas learned to play was the euphonium. He wanted to try trombone to increase his versatility and knowledge of brass instruments. 鈥淧icking up trombone has led me to several opportunities unique to trombone players, such as solos, being in jazz band, and even performing in a trombone octet for my last year in marching drum corps,鈥 he explained. 鈥淚 love the unique tone and color of the trombone, and how flexible it can be in any ensemble, be it orchestral, marching band, or jazz oriented.鈥

Booth has played tenor saxophone for seven years and chose the instrument because he wanted to play jazz. Besides being thankful to perform with the elite group, Booth appreciated the chance to meet other musicians and future educators. 鈥淚 liked playing and making music with other people that have the same mindset about music as I do,鈥 he added. 鈥淭he Honor Band was amazing. I learned a lot and was able to meet some very influential people during this opportunity.鈥

previously performed with Grammy-winner Michael Bubl茅.

Dixon also expressed his excitement about being chosen to participate and to meet and perform with other dedicated musicians. At the conference, he participated in a jam session with trumpeter Justin Ray, who had previously played with five-time Grammy-winner Michael Bubl茅. 鈥淚t was an experience unlike any other,鈥 Dixon asserted. 鈥淭he honor band was a blast to be a part of, and I feel pure wonder about the entire event.鈥

A trumpet player for 13 years, Dixon picked up the instrument because his grandfather used to play. 鈥淚 like the virtuosic nature of the trumpet,鈥 he described. 鈥淲hen I am in the band, I feel free when we get to play wonderful melodies or beautiful harmonies.鈥

Largest-Ever Choral Clinic Brings 336 Students to Campus to Experience Music Education and Campus Life

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 蜜豆直播 Department of Music recently welcomed the largest group ever to its 46th Choral Clinic. Attending the daylong event were 336 students representing 32 middle and high schools from 11 counties across North Carolina. Eleven schools participated for the first time this year.

“This is our largest recruiting event every year and an opportunity for choirs in North Carolina to experience everything GWU has to offer,” noted Dr. Joshua Cheney, associate professor of music and director of choral activities. “We love the Choral Clinic!”

The clinicians were Dr. Aaron Rice, associate professor and chair of the 蜜豆直播 Department of Music, and Dr. Jill Campbell from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. The groups participated in morning and afternoon rehearsals with the clinicians. The students also had lunch in the Caf, toured campus, and presented a concert at 6:30 p.m. The GW student chapter of NAfME (National Association for Music Education) assisted with registration, distributed shirts and information, conducted tours, and helped in a variety of ways.

HS Clinic
The combined high school choirs rehearse their music.

The high school choirs prepared all of their music in advance. On the day of the clinic, Rice helped solidify pitches and rhythms while adding the nuances of choral artistry during their rehearsals.

Also held during the event was the Third Treble Voices Clinic, which is offered to students in grades four through eight. 鈥淭his group differed from the high school group as they prepare half of the music in advance, and the other half is taught by the clinician that day,鈥 explained Dr. Eric Johnson, GWU assistant professor of music education. 鈥淚 decided to structure this group in that way when we started, so that our 蜜豆直播 music education students, as well as the teachers in attendance, could see a clinician take the students from not knowing to performance. This helps them all see different examples of teaching pedagogy in action.鈥

Johnson added that Campbell, an associate professor of music education, was selected to teach the younger group because of her noted work with the adolescent developing voice and her fun pedagogical approaches.

After the event, Campbell praised the 蜜豆直播 choral department. 鈥淭he professors truly care about their work and their students,鈥 she affirmed. 鈥淭hey work for and achieve excellence while still serving their students with kindness and respect. I will not soon forget their hospitality and my experience with the event. We made music together and learned from one another. I am grateful for my experience at 蜜豆直播. A major shout out to Dr. Johnson and Dr. Cheney for their hands on preparation for the festival. They are top notch conductors and humans!鈥

Annual Christmas Concert Invites the Community to Experience the Joy of the Season on Dec. 4

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 蜜豆直播 University Department of Music invites the communities of 蜜豆直播, Boiling Springs, and greater Cleveland County to the 40th annual celebration of Festival of Lights on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Dover Theatre. This annual event features a joyful selection of Christmas classics, sacred choral works, and holiday favorites performed by talented 蜜豆直播 students and faculty.

General admission is $15. Tickets are available . The first 50 students to reserve tickets with Linda Lee (llee10@gardner-webb.edu) in the Department of Music will receive free tickets to the Festival of Lights performance.

“The Department of Music is thrilled to present the 2025 Festival of Lights,” emphasized Dr. Aaron M. Rice, department chair and associate professor of music. “Our ensembles have the most cross-campus engagement in a decade, presenting captivating performances and compelling musical experiences. This 蜜豆直播 tradition continues to grow each year with excellence and passionate expression. We look forward to connecting with our Cleveland County community as we celebrate the birth of Christ with the sounds of the season.”

The event opens with a welcome and prayer by Interim University President Nate Evans. Then, the GWU orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Patricia Sparti, performs 鈥淎 Christmas Hallelujah鈥 by Tom Fettke. With familiar melodies and heartfelt orchestration, this piece sets the tone for the celebration by inviting listeners to reflect on the birth of Christ and rejoice in the hope of the season.

Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service Dr. Josh Parrott will share the scripture readings throughout the program. Passages from Micah and Isaiah prophesy the birth of Jesus, and selections from Luke relate the Christmas story.

Dr. Joshua Cheney, associate professor and director of choral activities described the music for the evening. 鈥淭his year鈥檚 program features familiar carols and audience sing-alongs as well as original selections by some of today鈥檚 greatest living composers such as Ola Gjeilo, Ivo Antognini, and Eric Whitacre,鈥 he noted. 鈥淭he audience will hear wonderful performances by all of the GWU Choirs as well as the GWU Orchestra as we open the Christmas season.鈥

Group of High School Students to Present Free Concert on July 17 at 10 a.m. in Dover Chapel and Tour Surrounding Area

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he All-State Youth Choir (ASYC) of Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) of North Carolina will be in concert on July 17 at 10 a.m. in 蜜豆直播 University’s Dover Chapel. The theme of the concert is “Always,” based on Matthew 28:20B: “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age,” and features a commissioned anthem by the same name. The event is free and open to the public.

Tyler Ingram, a member of the ASYC planning team, said the program includes a variety of choral music genres such as hymnody, contemporary, spirituals, and others. Maureen Howell was asked to write 鈥淎lways鈥 to celebrate 25 years of ASYC. This year鈥檚 director is Steven Thomason, who is the first alumni to lead the group.

Through the years, the ASYC has stayed at 蜜豆直播 several times. In addition, GWU鈥檚 Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music, Dr. Aaron Rice, directed the group last year.

鈥淲e are excited to be back at GWU, as we have always had a good experience when staying there,鈥 Ingram noted. 鈥淲e are grateful for the wonderful hospitality and partnership of the Bulldogs!鈥

The group is made up of ninth- through 12th-graders from across North Carolina who audition to join. Sunday, July 13, through Wednesday, July 16, the choir will rehearse and participate in activities on campus. 鈥淲hen Thursday arrives, we begin to share in concerts and other ministry activities in the area and across western N.C.,鈥 Ingram offered. 鈥淭his year we look forward to serving in a food bank, exploring the Tryon International Equestrian Center, and of course, our evening concerts at various churches.鈥

The tour schedule includes:

  • July 17 – 6 p.m., First Baptist Church, Lincolnton, N.C.
  • July 18 – 6 p.m., First Baptist Church, Marion, N.C.
  • July 19 – 6 p.m., First Baptist Church, Forest City, N.C.
  • July 20 – 11 a.m., First Baptist Church, Albemarle, N.C.
  • July 20 – 6 p.m., Ardmore Baptist in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Phil Campbell has served as coordinator for the choir since 2009, starting out as a member of the planning team in 2002. 鈥淚 fell in love with the entire concept of ministry through music on this level,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淕od has truly blessed this organization in many ways. We are under the umbrella of the CBF and have their total support.鈥

The group receives a small gift from CBF along with donations from private donors and churches. 鈥淲e do have to raise our own funds, and students pay their own way to be a part of the choir, and some receive help from their churches,鈥 Campbell stated. 鈥淚t has been very humbling to coordinate such an awesome team of youth and adults.鈥

Percussionist is First Student Chosen from GWU to Participate in Program Sponsored by College Band Directors National Association

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜s 蜜豆直播 University senior Connor Settlemyre waited to perform with some of the best musicians from around the country, he looked up to see members of the audience seated directly above the stage, anticipating the music to begin. The performance was the culmination of three days of practice at the National Small Band Programs Intercollegiate Band, meeting in Fort Worth, Texas. In the previous 72 hours, the 106 people around him had become friends, and they were ready to present a stirring program of music.

concert in Van Cliburn Concert Hall.

鈥淚 was super excited,鈥 remarked Settlemyre, of Rutherfordton, N.C. 鈥淚 thought that the music was really cool, and I was ready for the audience to hear it. I knew that we had been working extremely hard over the three days prior and that it was going to be a great performance. The concert hall was extremely nice and had some cool features. One of these being seats on a second level that were essentially over the stage. This whole experience was something I will never forget.鈥

Settlemyre was nominated for the National Small Band Programs Intercollegiate Band by Dr. Sarah Fabian, 蜜豆直播 director of Bands. After an application process and audition, he became the first 蜜豆直播 student selected for this outstanding achievement. 鈥淚t was truly an honor to witness Connor perform with this incredible ensemble,鈥 Fabian praised. 鈥淗e had the privilege of working with a talented conductor, engaging with several composers, and forming lasting connections with many new musicians. I鈥檓 so grateful to have played a part in providing him with this remarkable opportunity. Watching Connor bring such incredible pieces to life with the National Honor Band filled me with immense pride. His performance was nothing short of extraordinary, and I couldn鈥檛 be prouder of his accomplishments.鈥

The concert was held in conjunction with the 2025 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) on March 26-29 in Fort Worth. It was presented in the Van Cliburn Concert Hall at Texas Christian University, a 715-seat performance hall acoustically designed for chamber and orchestral music.

鈥淏eing able to represent 蜜豆直播 University in a national setting is something I never thought I would be able to do, but I am truly blessed to have been able to,鈥 Settlemyre reflected. 鈥淭his experience allowed me to perform with some of the best musicians from across the country. This ensemble was by far the largest I have ever performed in and allowed for some great rehearsals. I learned a ton, as a performer and as an educator, that I will use as I continue my musical career.鈥

Connor Settlemyre, left, poses with James Jackson, the
conductor of the National Small Band Programs
Intercollegiate Band.

Settlemyre noted the best part of the full weekend was being able to connect with people from across the country for a common goal. 鈥淲hen we arrived at practice on Wednesday night, we were complete strangers but by the concert on Saturday, we were one big family,鈥 he affirmed. 鈥淚 learned so much from our conductor about how to captivate a group. He did a fantastic job at keeping us engaged despite the long hours of rehearsal. This whole experience is something that I am extremely grateful for.鈥

He said the opportunity elevated his skills as both a musician and as an educator. As a musician, he learned technical things from others in his section. As an educator, he watched the conductor and how he connected the group to the music emotionally, as well as offered instruction to enhance their technical skills.

鈥淚 want to thank CBDNA for making this honor band a possibility,鈥 Settlemyre acknowledged. 鈥淭his experience was life changing, and I will never forget it. I also want to thank Dr. Fabian for believing in me enough to even bring this possibility to me. Dr. Fabian has been with me every step of my collegiate career since she arrived at 蜜豆直播, and I am forever grateful for the impact she has left on my life. Throughout this whole process, she was there for anything I needed. Whether it was help with an audition excerpt or help with a section of the concert repertoire, she was there to help. I would not be the musician I am today without her guidance. I also want to thank the music department for supporting me on this crazy journey. None of this would have been possible without the support of the faculty.鈥
