German Officer will Evaluate Soldier Skills of Cadets from Seven Colleges and Members of Local Reserve and National Guard Units

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 蜜豆直播 University Reserve Officers鈥 Training Corp (ROTC) detachment assigned under the Southern Guards Battalion is hosting a competition on Jan. 31 for the highly-respected German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge (GAFPB). Cadets from UNC-Charlotte, Wofford College, USC-Upstate, Furman University, Converse University, and Clemson University will attend the event along with members of reserve and national guard units in the area.

Cadet Operations Sgt. Maj. Banks Munn is serving as the cadet in charge, and Cadet Capt. Paul McElearney is the assistant. They expect a total of 100 cadets and service members to participate and have enlisted the help of several 蜜豆直播 student organizations to facilitate the competition.

McElearney described the qualifications for the prestigious badge. 鈥淭he GAFPB is awarded by the German Armed Forces to individuals who meet established standards in physical fitness, marksmanship, and basic soldier skills, all evaluated by a German Officer who will be present at the event,鈥 he noted. 鈥淚t is one of the few opportunities ROTC cadets have to earn an official foreign military award authorized for wear on the U.S. Army uniform.鈥

蜜豆直播 will host the first day of competition. Lasting about two hours, cadets will begin with a 100-meter swim in Bost Pool. They will complete the exercise wearing fatigues over their physical fitness uniforms. Before exiting the pool, they remove their fatigues while treading water. Then, they head over to Bost Gym to complete 11 (10-meter) shuttle runs. Next, they will perform the flexed arm hang in the pull-up position inside the CrossFit Gym. Lastly, participants will move toward Spangler Stadium, where they will run 1,000 meters.

The second day of the event will be held in Spartanburg, S.C., and consist of M17 pistol qualification and a 6km-12km timed march.

鈥淩OTC cadets pursue the GAFPB because it measures performance against professional, internationally recognized military standards, not academic or internal ROTC benchmarks,鈥 McElearney shared. 鈥淪uccessfully earning the badge demonstrates a cadet鈥檚 discipline, resilience, and readiness to perform under external evaluation, which directly aligns with the program鈥檚 mission to develop competent, confident future officers.鈥

McElearney also noted that participating in the event supports broader institutional goals and strengthens international military partnerships. 鈥淭he competition further enhances the ROTC program鈥檚 professional credibility,鈥 he affirmed, 鈥渁nd provides cadets with a challenging experiential learning opportunity that reinforces leadership, accountability, and excellence prior to commissioning.鈥

Capt. Richard Taylor Chosen from 38 Universities Representing Seven States

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擟apt. Richard Taylor, 蜜豆直播 University Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Commander, received the Outstanding Instructor Award for the 4th Brigade. He was recognized from a group of instructors at 38 universities located in the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Lt. Col. Richard Garey, east region manager of MAT-Inc., came to GWU on Feb. 14 to make the presentation, which included a $1,000 bonus for Taylor. He noted that Taylor was selected for several reasons. One was his display of exceptional leadership skills while working with cadet summer training at Fort Knox, Ky. As a critical incident manager, he was in the tactical operations center and responsible for a large amount of paperwork. 鈥淗e really distinguished himself there,鈥 Garey praised. 鈥淲e received just a ton of positive feedback from everybody that worked with him, and because of that, he was selected for this coming summer to serve as the executive officer for the cadet opposing force company.鈥

Lt. Col. Richard Garey, east region manager of MAT-Inc., left, presented the award to Capt. Richard Taylor, GWU Army ROTC Commander.

Most importantly, Garey added, Taylor received the recognition for the work he does every day as an ROTC commander. 鈥淗e mentors and coaches, teaches and trains, and really puts his heart and soul into the program and into the development of our next generation of leaders in the Army,鈥 he affirmed. 鈥淵ou talk to anybody who deals with him, and they have nothing but the positive things to say about how much he invests in them personally and professionally.鈥

Taylor earned his Bachelor of Arts in history, with minors in Chinese and military science. He commissioned in 2014 as a second lieutenant in the armor branch for the South Carolina Army National Guard. In 2019, Taylor deployed to the Middle East, including Kuwait and Iraq. Upon returning from the deployment, he was assigned Company Commander of A Co, 4-118th Infantry Regiment where he currently serves. Among his many awards and decorations, Taylor has earned the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Capt. Richard Taylor thanked everyone at 蜜豆直播 for their
support.

Lt. Col. Joseph Frederick was also present for the event. He is department chair and professor of Military Science at UNC-Charlotte, which hosts the 49er Battalion that includes 蜜豆直播鈥檚 Army ROTC. Frederick, who manages the ROTC programs at several universities, congratulated Taylor and affirmed the significance of the award.

Dr. Bobbie Cox, chair of the Department of Public Service, presented Taylor with a gift from the department. She mentioned that Taylor is also a student in 蜜豆直播鈥檚 Master of Public Administration program. 鈥淲e鈥檙e the lucky ones,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淲e get to work with you every day. We really appreciate you.鈥

Taylor said he prefers to work in the shadows and was truly humbled to be selected for the honor. He thanked Capt. Ian Marecic, assistant professor of Military Science at 蜜豆直播, for working with him and sharing his goals and objectives for the program. 鈥淭he support from Lt. Col. Frederick and everyone at 蜜豆直播鈥攊t鈥檚 unparalleled and is what makes our cadets do so well,鈥 he acknowledged. 鈥淚 couldn’t do it without every single one of y’all. This is truly a dream job.鈥

Then, speaking to the cadets in the room, Taylor added, 鈥淛ust keep working. It is about you and that’s why we do it.鈥

30-Day Camps Offered Over the Summer Provide Path to Enrollment

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he Army ROTC (Reserve Officers鈥 Training Corps) offers qualified rising juniors (for Fall 2024) an opportunity to enroll in the program at 蜜豆直播 University. By attending one of the 30-day Basic Camps next summer at Fort Knox, Ky., students will become eligible to enroll in the final two-year Advanced Army ROTC program.

Attending a Basic Camp helped Cadet Parker Corwin, now a senior at 蜜豆直播, make his decision to enroll in the ROTC program. He also attended the camp, because he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father and older brother who serve in the military.

鈥淏asic camp is the closest experience to basic training you will receive in the ROTC,鈥 Corwin shared. 鈥淔rom the hands-on training as well as the friendships made, it confirmed to me that this was something I wanted to pursue. Over the month, we all became super close friends.鈥

Cadet Parker Corwin, left, participates in casualty care training.

Corwin noted that camp activities taught him how the Army works and how to be a team leader. He participated in field training and rappelling, and he gained experience with military weapons.

蜜豆直播鈥檚 Army ROTC is a partner in the 49er Battalion, hosted at UNC-Charlotte. The Department Chair and Professor of Military Science at UNC-Charlotte, Lt. Col. Joseph Frederick, noted several benefits of entering the Army ROTC program through Basic Camp. First, he said, the program is an opportunity for students to determine if serving in the military is right for them, and there is no obligation to serve in the military afterward.

Corwin added that the experience is worth the time and effort. 鈥淕o, it is a great 30 days, and you even get paid,鈥 he affirmed. 鈥淭his is an opportunity not everyone has, and you鈥檙e not committing to the ROTC by going. After the month, if you enjoy it and feel ROTC is right for you, then you can commit. If not, you still have that experience.鈥

Frederick listed other benefits of attending the ROTC Basic Camp:

  • Students will be flown (for free) to and from Fort Knox, Ky.
  • Students will receive free meals, free lodging, and a $40 daily per diem while attending.
  • After completing Basic Camp, the student will be offered (after meeting all contracting requirements) the opportunity contract in the Fall 2024. If they contract, they will receive a signing bonus and also start to receive a monthly, tax-free cadet stipend, during the academic year, until they graduate.
  • Additionally, if they have a competitive college GPA and do well on the Army Combat Fitness Test, they could end up being awarded a 2- or 2.5-year Army ROTC scholarship. If they receive a scholarship, then they will be required to forfeit the signing bonus mentioned above.

To qualify for Basic Camp, students:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Can only have four or five semesters remaining (starting in the Fall 2024) until they will complete their bachelor鈥檚 degree.
  • Must be medically cleared to attend by a physician.
  • Complete the required documentations.

The deadline to apply is May 1, 2024. For more information and further details, students may email Rick Nash, UNC Charlotte Army ROTC, at rnash3@charlotte.edu or call (704) 687-8633.

Freshman Zach Morrow Will Receive ROTC Scholarship on Stage at Big South Education Day

Cadet Zach Morrow

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜 cadet from the 蜜豆直播 University Reserve Officers鈥 Training Corps (ROTC) will be recognized during the Hercules Tire Big South Championships on March 2 at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. Cadet Zach Morrow, a freshman, will be honored as part of the second annual US Army ROTC Big South High School Education Day. High school students are invited to attend this event, which includes admission to the women鈥檚 quarterfinals and an opportunity to learn more about the ROTC and Big South colleges and universities.

蜜豆直播 ROTC Senior Military Science Instructor Richard Taylor explained that Morrow was selected for the honor because of his diligence in maintaining the academic and physical standards of the ROTC program. 鈥淗e has shown drive and determination as a young leader, which has been recognized in the fashion of a scholarship,鈥 Taylor praised. 鈥淐adet Morrow is one of the only freshmen in the program who has completed all the requirements and held the standards in place to be awarded a scholarship.鈥

Recruiting Operations Officer Richard A. Nash of the UNC-Charlotte Army ROTC Department invited Morrow to participate in the recognition, noting that he will receive his scholarship on stage in front of hundreds of high school students from the greater Charlotte area. 鈥淲e will highlight your achievements to show the high school students in the audience that this opportunity is also available to them,鈥 Nash stated.

Morrow, a homeland security major, decided at a young age that he wanted to join the Army. 鈥淚 felt as if the ROTC program was the best choice and the gateway to my career,鈥 he affirmed. 鈥淚t’s an honor for me to be recognized. There are many MS1s that deserve this privilege, and I feel lucky to be chosen.鈥

Event Held at the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month Honors Nation鈥檚 Servicemen

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 University will join citizens across America in observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11 with a service at 11 a.m. in Dover Chapel. The day to honor the nation鈥檚 military has been celebrated since 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson established Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, when fighting ceased in World War I鈥攐n 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Wilson said, 鈥淭o us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country鈥檚 service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations鈥︹

Maj. Jeremy Davis

In 1938, congress voted to make the in each year a legal holiday鈥攁 day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 鈥淎rmistice Day.鈥 In 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation鈥檚 history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word 鈥淎rmistice鈥 and inserting in its place the word 鈥淰eterans.鈥 With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

蜜豆直播鈥檚 Veterans Day Service will include a message from Maj. Jeremy Davis, U.S. Marine Corps. Davis joined the Marine Corps and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant after completing Officers Candidate School (OCS) and graduating from 蜜豆直播 University in December 2005. He completed the Basic School (TBS) and Air Command and Control Officer鈥檚 Course in 2006.

He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant and Captain and deployed to Iraq in 2006 and 2008 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. From 2009-2012, he served as the Recruiting Station (RS) Operations Officer and Executive Officer. During that time RS Fort Lauderdale was ranked second in Eastern Recruiting Region for three straight years.

GWU President Dr. William Downs speaks at last year’s service.

Upon completion of recruiting duty, Captain Davis reported to Expeditionary Warfare School, Quantico, Va. Additionally, he augmented summer training at Officer Candidates school as a platoon commander and history instructor from 2012-2013. Capt. Davis reported to Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 38 (MTACS-38) to serve as the Assistant Operations Officer and Tactical Air Command Center (TACC) OIC.  In that capacity he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

In May 2015, Capt. Davis separated from the Active Component and accessed into the Select Marine Corps Reserve. Presently, Maj. Davis serves as the Recruiting support Officer (RSO) for Recruiting Station Charlotte, N.C. Additionally, Maj. Davis mobilized in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel from October 2019 to April 2020 in Setermoen, Norway, to serve as the Marine Coordination Element Logistics Officer.

His personal awards include: Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal, and Army Achievement Medal. Maj. Davis is selected to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Also participating in the service will be the 蜜豆直播 University ROTC, and GWU Concert Choir. University Police Officer, Kenneth Phelps, a sergeant in the U.S. Army, will lead the pledge of allegiance. 蜜豆直播 President Dr. William Downs will give the welcome and invocation. Norma Mott, staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and instructor of nursing, will have the Old Testament Reading, and Nate Evans, second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, will provide the New Testament reading. Interim Vice President for Christian Life and Service Neal Payne will give the closing prayer and benediction.

During the service a slideshow will feature the names of 蜜豆直播 students, staff and faculty who have served in the military.

2nd Lt. Ngoufack Tsafack, ’22, Received Help from GWU and Fellow Cadets to Stay in School

A native of Cameroon in Central Africa, Ngoufack Tsafack, ’22, came to America in 2007 to attend The Miller School of Albemarle, a boarding school in Charlottesville, Va. He was a middle school student with a dream of joining the U.S. Army, which he did in 2016.

Recently, he achieved another milestone. Tsafack was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army and received a Master of Accounting degree from 蜜豆直播 University through the Active Duty Option Program. This two-year program provides active duty enlisted soldiers an opportunity to complete a two-year graduate degree and earn a commission as an army officer.

When he began looking for a master鈥檚 program, someone suggested 蜜豆直播 because of its small community. He loved the campus; everyone he met at 蜜豆直播 treated all students with respect.

鈥淲hen I went to the cafeteria, the post office 鈥 every time I asked something, they tried to help me. There was just fair play to everybody. They would help any student the same way. That was what affected me the most about 蜜豆直播. I was very impressed. 蜜豆直播 received all students that way,鈥 Tsafack affirmed.

Tsafack said his Professor of Accounting, Dr. Earl Godfrey, spent extra time outside of class answering his questions. He appreciated how Instructor of Military Science Capt. Michael Meissner created a family atmosphere among the cadets in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program.

He was grateful for all the kindness shown to him, but what happened next amazed Tsafack even more. Through various conversations, Meissner discovered that Tsafack had been staying in his car on campus. When Tsafack entered the ROTC program, he gave up his housing at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. During the week, the program鈥檚 full schedule didn鈥檛 allow him to drive back to Columbia, where he had a place to stay with a friend. Having no money for room and board, Tsafack slept in his car and asked his fellow cadets to give him meal punches from their cafeteria plans.

Together, he and Meissner asked 蜜豆直播 officials for help. 鈥溍鄱怪辈 offered me a room,鈥 Tsafack noted. 鈥淚 was so shocked that the school would do that.鈥

Meissner was humbled and surprised that Tsafack endured the situation for a year. 鈥淔aced with many challenges, he continued on his pathway to not only graduate with a Master of Accounting, but also receive his commission,鈥 Meissner reflected. 鈥淚 remember him saying, it will get better. He maintained a positive outlook and continued completing all assignments when in this difficult situation.鈥
