Hendersonville Senior Recognized for Leadership, Compassion, and a Calling to Serve Others Through Nursing

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擲harlotte Lyda, of Hendersonville, N.C., is the 2026 recipient of 蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 highest honor for incoming undergraduate students, the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength Scholarship. The sixth student in the history of the scholarship to be recognized with this honor, Lyda was surprised when GWU President Nate Evans and members of 蜜豆直播鈥檚 admissions staff, along with the University鈥檚 Mascot, Mac, recently interrupted a family gathering to make the announcement.

IMG

鈥淲inning this scholarship means so much to my family, and it opens many doors that wouldn鈥檛 be possible without it,鈥 Lyda shared. 鈥淚t is a blessing to know that through this scholarship, I have not only made my family proud of what I have accomplished in the last four years, but I have repaid them for the time and energy they have poured into me to support me and cheer me on as I have taken on what life throws our way. I hope I am able to make my family, the Tucker family, and the entire Gardner Webb community proud of what I accomplish and the woman I turn into.鈥

The Tucker Scholarship provides full-tuition, room and board for eight semesters. Robert and Carolyn Tucker established the annual award to recognize a high school senior who exemplifies the principles and values representative of the 蜜豆直播 community. The qualifications are based on the Tucker family鈥檚 life verse, Mark 12:29-31. In this passage, Jesus gives the two most important commandments: 鈥淟ove the Lord Your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.鈥

Evans remarked on the impact the Tuckers鈥 gift has made on students and the campus community. 鈥淭he Tucker family鈥檚 commitment to 蜜豆直播 is a powerful example of faith in action,鈥 he shared. 鈥淭heir investment in students like Sharlotte is not only changing individual lives, but also advancing the values that define our University.鈥

Lyda, a student at North Henderson High School in Hendersonville, is president of the student body. As an AP Scholar, she has also earned distinctions as a junior marshal, scholar athlete, and member of the National Honor Society. She is captain of the varsity cheerleaders, statistician for the wrestling team, and serves as an officer and Cheer Huddle Leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). She has served three years as editor of the high school yearbook and is a HOSA-Future Health Professionals member and competitor.

Evans was impressed by Lyda鈥檚 character and servant leadership. 鈥淪harlotte embodies the heart of the Tucker Scholarship,鈥 he said. 鈥淗er academic excellence, deep faith, and genuine compassion for others reflect the values we hope to see in every 蜜豆直播 student. She leads with humility, serves with joy, and has already demonstrated a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around her.鈥

Lyda plans to major in nursing and minor in American Sign Language at 蜜豆直播. She wants to pursue a career as a pediatric ICU nurse and would also like to obtain a master鈥檚 degree in nursing. 鈥淗ealthcare has always interested me, and knowing how the body works has fascinated me since learning about the skeletal system in elementary school, but helping people is my passion,鈥 she stated. 鈥淜nowing I have the ability, skill, and opportunity to make a difference in someone鈥檚 life is something I have wanted to be a part of since I was a little girl and my grandmother was sick. My grandmother was influential in my life, and her nurses were the backbone of her cancer treatment and monumental to my family. This is the kind of difference I hope to make in my nursing career.鈥

Sharlotte lyda food pantry

The compassion that guides Lyda鈥檚 career ambitions is the same quality that distinguished her throughout the highly-competitive Tucker Scholarship process. Only students nominated by a minister, teacher, guidance counselor or community leader who is unrelated to them are invited to apply. Then, the student submits at least two additional letters of recommendation, an essay, and the application form.

Lyda was nominated by her school鈥檚 guidance counselor, Leigh Leik, who described her passion for serving others, her sincere faith and strong character, and her academic achievements. 鈥淗er 350+ volunteer hours, along with her work as youth director and Sunday school teacher at St. Andrew鈥檚 Anglican Church, show her commitment to caring for children, supporting families, and strengthening her community,鈥 Leik wrote in her nomination. 鈥淗er involvement in initiatives like Knights vs. Cancer and her leadership roles in FCA and Student Government further reflect her dedication to serving others with kindness and understanding.鈥

Lyda鈥檚 teacher, Sue Moon, shared more details about Knights vs. Cancer in her letter of recommendation. The annual student-led event raises money for Vs Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to curing children鈥檚 cancer. Lyda was a team captain and planned and hosted Cars For a Cure, a car show that also generated financial support and community engagement in the fight against cancer. With her leadership, North Henderson raised over $19,000 for the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Mission Children鈥檚 Hospital.

North Henderson鈥檚 head wrestling coach, Keang Heang Uy, who is also FCA co-sponsor, praised Sharlotte for her work as the wrestling team鈥檚 statistician and as a FCA leader. 鈥淪harlotte is exceptionally detail-oriented and proactively manages crucial administrative tasks for both the wrestling program and FCA, often anticipating needs that I have overlooked or forgotten,鈥 Uy noted in his letter. 鈥淗er competency is such that she could manage the logistical aspects of the wrestling program鈥攊ncluding data entry, records management, and video uploads鈥攊ndependently. Her unparalleled reliability, integrity, and attention to detail are why she was elected Student Body President this year.鈥

Lyda is looking forward to joining the Runnin鈥 Bulldog community next year. 鈥淕ardner Webb has so many organizations and opportunities, and it is important to get involved and be a part of this culture,鈥 she noted. 鈥淎s a future student, I am excited to bring my own skill sets and personality to campus and contribute to this culture in my own unique way, bringing new ideas and opportunities to make a bigger difference. I can鈥檛 wait to see what the Lord has planned for me at 蜜豆直播!鈥

Pinnacle Classical Academy Senior is the First Male to Win the Award and the First Recipient from Cleveland County, N.C.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶ill Brooks, of Shelby, N.C., is the 2025 recipient of 蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 highest honor for incoming undergraduate students, the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength Scholarship. He is the sixth student in the history of the scholarship to be recognized with this honor. He also has the distinction of being the first male to win the award, and he is the first person from Cleveland County, N.C., to receive the Tucker Scholarship.

Brooks was surprised with the announcement on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Pinnacle Classical Academy in Shelby. Upon entering the Student Center filled with family, friends, and Pinnacle staff, Brooks was greeted by members of 蜜豆直播鈥檚 admissions staff and the University鈥檚 Mascot, Mac. Director of Admissions Molly Allison informed an astonished Brooks of the good news.

鈥淭his is definitely a surprise,鈥 Brooks declared. Then, he thanked Carolyn and Robert Tucker, who established the scholarship in 2019. 鈥淚 will not let them down,鈥 he added. 鈥淚鈥檓 going to work hard.鈥

Will is the son of Derrick and Angela Brooks. His mom is the dean of secondary education at Pinnacle. She invited everyone at school to the scholarship announcement, which she kept a secret from almost everyone in the room. 鈥淕etting the Tucker Scholarship is a blessing,鈥 she acknowledged. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 be more excited, and proud.鈥

Will Brooks, center, poses with his parents, Angela and Derrick, his sister, Amy, and Mac.

Brooks was one of 227 high school seniors who applied for the scholarship and among 56 finalists invited to campus for interviews. Applicants represented 16 states鈥攆rom as far west as Nevada to as far north as Wisconsin.

The award includes full-tuition, room and board for eight semesters. The Tuckers created the scholarship to annually recognize a high school senior who exemplifies the principles and values representative of the 蜜豆直播 community. The qualifications are based on the Tucker family鈥檚 life verse, Mark 12:29-31. In this passage, Jesus gives the two most important commandments: 鈥淟ove the Lord Your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.鈥

鈥淲e met a truly outstanding group of finalists over two days in early December,鈥 shared GWU President Dr. William Downs. 鈥淔or Will to emerge atop that list of high-character, high-ability students really says something special about who he is, about how well suited he is for the 蜜豆直播 experience, and about how confident we are that he will faithfully represent the values of our institution in all that he does. I congratulate Will and look forward to getting to know him better鈥nd I truly hope we also succeed in recruiting the other 55 finalists to join Will as Runnin鈥 Bulldogs in Fall 2025!鈥

The Tuckers are the founders of Shoe Show Inc. in Concord, N.C. In 2010, they gave the University $5.5 million to help build the Tucker Student Center. Their daughter, Lisa, is a 1989 alumna and former volleyball player for 蜜豆直播. She has remained actively engaged with the University for over three decades and currently serves on the Board of Trustees and the Tucker Scholarship Selection Committee. She also serves as president of the family鈥檚 business.

A senior at Pinnacle Classical Academy, Brooks is one of the top 10 students in his class. He plans to major in finance/economics at 蜜豆直播. Brooks is also a talented musician who sings and plays piano, guitar and bass. Brooks also plays basketball, baseball, and runs cross country, all while maintaining his high academic standards.

Those who recommended him for the Tucker Scholarship noted Brooks鈥 perseverance, commitment to improvement, and leadership whether on the court, classroom or stage. 鈥淲hether contributing to a team effort or setting personal goals, Will has always been an example of determination and sportsmanship, earning the respect of both teammates and coaches,鈥 noted Pinnacle鈥檚 Associate Dean of Secondary Education Cindi Welch, who is also his math teacher. 鈥淎bove all, Will Brooks is a person of impeccable character. His integrity, kindness, and humility are qualities that consistently set him apart. He is a role model for his peers, demonstrating maturity, respect for others, and a positive attitude.鈥

Welch also noted that Brooks is an active member of the National Honor Society and has participated in numerous community service projects, from an annual Relay for Life fundraiser to ringing the bell in the freezing cold for the local crisis assistance ministry at Christmas. 鈥淗is passion for helping others is evident through his volunteer work, where he has made a difference in our community and beyond,鈥 Welch stated in her letter. 鈥淲ill has a strong sense of responsibility and compassion, and he is always looking for ways to give back.鈥

Brooks was also recommended by James Laughlin, his English teacher at Pinnacle for two years. Laughlin stated that Brooks stands out because even though he is the son of the high school dean, he works hard to make a name for himself. 鈥淲ill wants to make our school the best in our county,鈥 Laughlin wrote. 鈥淎nd, he shows that in the various events that he volunteers at throughout the year, the committees that he serves on, and the way that he carries himself both in and out of the classroom.鈥

The first step in the application process is to be nominated for the Tucker Scholarship by a minister, teacher, guidance counselor or community leader who is unrelated to the student. Caswell Martin, the guidance counselor at Pinnacle, nominated him, and additional letters of recommendation were submitted by Melody M. Bradley, the music director and wife of pastor Russ Bradley at New Hope Baptist Church, and Niki Bliss-Carroll, department chair of English, Communications, and Academic Study Skills at Cleveland Community College.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 University marked the start of the academic year with the Fall Opening Convocation. A time for faculty, students and staff to reaffirm their commitment to scholarly pursuits, the annual event also welcomes first-year students and celebrates GWU鈥檚 newest scholarship recipients. The featured speaker, Assistant Professor of Physics Dr. Wilson Hawkins, challenged students to 鈥淢ake. It. Count!鈥

As the recipient of the 2024 President鈥檚 Early Career Award, Hawkins was invited to speak at convocation. He noted that his father spoke the same three words to him when he started college, and that was all he needed to say. 鈥淗e had already built the underlying context over years of serving me as a father, a friend, a boss-man, and a spiritual leader.鈥 Hawkins continued, 鈥淵ou see, my parents didn鈥檛 have the opportunity to go to college, but nonetheless saw value in higher education. They always made academics a top priority; pushing me to challenge myself with advanced curriculum, refusing to accept excuses, and demanding good grades. Without their constant encouragement and hard work鈥攁nd trust me, I was a lot of work鈥擨 wouldn鈥檛 be standing in front of you here today.鈥

Hawkins acknowledged that no one finds success alone. 鈥淓very one of you represent a village of parents, babysitters, teachers, mentors, friends, and authors that pushed you to seek more, to not settle, to chase success. All of the help, love, and adversity in your story has molded and shaped you into the person you are today. Never forget where you came from and always remember that you are here because someone invested in you. It鈥檚 up to you to make the most of your time here, and I personally guarantee that you will get out of this experience whatever you鈥檙e willing to put in.鈥

When Hawkins finished, GWU President Dr. William M. Downs thanked him and all of the GWU faculty for being effective teachers, mentors, and advisors, who challenge and inspire students every day. Then, similar to Hawkins, Downs urged students to 鈥淓xplore. Discover. Thrive.鈥

鈥淟adies and gentlemen, my message is simple: We鈥檙e here for the journey. We鈥檙e here for the adventure.  We鈥檙e here for this moment,鈥 Downs asserted. 鈥淚 think the coolest thing about college is that we get to stare straight into the face of the unknown and ask it a question. At no other time in your life will you have the opportunity like this to ask and to try to answer life鈥檚 big questions. Education is about peering into the darkness and then looking for light. That鈥檚 the great exploration. That鈥檚 the great expedition. That鈥檚 the Big Adventure.鈥

Downs continued, 鈥淚f we accept the challenge of the great adventure before us, then just think of what we can do for the community beyond our walls. Think of what we can do for our neighbors, for our region, for our country.鈥

Winner Recognized for her Strong Character, Community Service, Leadership and 蜜豆直播

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擫ily Streeton, of High Point, N.C., is the 2024 recipient of 蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 highest honor for incoming undergraduate students, the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength Scholarship. She is the fifth student in the history of the scholarship to be recognized with this honor. Established in 2019 by Carolyn and Robert Tucker, the award includes full-tuition, room and board for eight semesters.

Streeton was one of 227 high school seniors who applied for the scholarship and among 49 finalists invited to campus for interviews. Applicants represented 19 states鈥攆rom the Carolinas to California and as far away as Hawaii.

鈥淓veryone on the selection committee was profoundly impressed by Lily,鈥 shared GWU President Dr. William Downs. 鈥淪he鈥檚 bright, articulate, academically accomplished, and broadly engaged in her community. What really shone through was her strong character, her clear foundation of solid values and principles, and her demonstrated dedication to a life in service to God and to humanity. In our view, Lily Streeton is a perfect fit for 蜜豆直播 and a perfect match for the Tucker Scholarship.鈥

Lily Streeton and her mom, Olivia

Streeton is an honor student at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point and volunteers with multiple community organizations that serve young people. She is the assistant worship leader at her church, Hope River in Gibsonville, N.C. She plays clarinet with the school orchestra and taught herself how to play tenor saxophone for the school鈥檚 production of 鈥淎nnie.鈥 She also has four part-time jobs.

鈥淭his scholarship is an amazing opportunity for me,鈥 Streeton affirmed. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a huge honor. I am so beyond blessed and thankful for this. It鈥檚 an answer to prayers.鈥

When she came for the scholarship interview, she decided then that even if she didn鈥檛 receive the Tucker Scholarship, she was coming to 蜜豆直播. 鈥淚 can see how everyone cares about each other, and they put God first as well,鈥 Streeton asserted. 鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to meeting new people, having new experiences, seeing other communities that I can get involved in, and finding some additional family.鈥

She plans to major in business management to follow in her mother Olivia鈥檚 footsteps. 鈥淢y mom is an entrepreneur,鈥 Streeton explained. 鈥淪he has two businesses鈥擵anity Resource, a furniture company, and Arcadia Home Delivery鈥攚hich she started because she needed someone to carry the vanities to people鈥檚 homes. She does such good work there. I see the people that she impacts, too. She calls it her missions鈥 field. The people that she hires have difficult pasts鈥攍ike alcoholism, drug abuse or they鈥檝e been convicted felons鈥攁nd I see that she gives them a second chance. She has a ton of people that she pours into and mentors. I would love to be able to do something like that.鈥

In her scholarship essay, Streeton explained what Mark 12:29-31 meant to her. 鈥淚 strive to live each and every day of my life for my God,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淚n compassion, in selfless service, and in empathy, I live to love like Him. I will make an excellent addition to the life and ministry of 蜜豆直播 University because I am confident鈥攏ot in my own ability to live out Mark 12:30鈥攂ut by my choice each and every day to give up my life as a living sacrifice to Him so that He may work through me for His glory and His honor.鈥

The first step in the application process is to be nominated for the Tucker Scholarship by a minister, teacher, guidance counselor or community leader who is unrelated to the student. Streeton was nominated by her school鈥檚 director of college admissions, Michelle Ledbetter. She recognized Streeton鈥檚 desire to grow in her faith, her work in the community and her academic achievements.

Applicants also submit letters of recommendation. In his letter, Kevin Peele, Streeton鈥檚 sophomore science teacher, described her strong intellect, attention to detail, cooperative attitude and inquisitive nature. Peele also wrote, 鈥淚 will also remember her willingness to assist other students with their studies. I was especially impressed with the manner in which she was able to provide instruction to such students鈥攈er accurate explanations, given in a clear and soft-spoken manner were well received.鈥

High School Senior Demonstrates 鈥楽ervice to the Gospel with a Heart for Humanity鈥

蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 2022 Tucker Scholar, Rachel Gaura of Chapin, S.C., is known for her willingness to serve her church, school and community with a caring spirit and humble nature. The teacher who nominated her for the Tucker Heart, Soul Mind and Strength Scholarship described how Gaura was the perfect representative of GWU鈥檚 most prestigious award.

鈥淭he Tucker Scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate commitment to carrying out service to the Gospel with a heart for humanity,鈥 noted Lauren Brown, a teacher at Spring Hill High School. 鈥淩achel Gaura is the embodiment of a heart for Jesus that reaches out to those around her, a soul that is nurtured through the constant study and implementation of God鈥檚 Holy Word, a mind gifted with discernment and intellect, and finally, strength found in her Savior that sustains her daily.鈥

Tucker Scholar winner Rachel Gaura poses with her friends and family after learning she won the Tucker Scholarship. From left, are Maggie Wilson (friend), Paul Anderson (grandfather), Rebecca Gaura (sister), Mary Beth Nugent (aunt), April Gaura (mom), Caleb Gaura (brother), Chris Gaura (dad), Debbie Anderson (grandmother), and Emma Nugent (cousin).

Established in 2019 by Carolyn and Robert Tucker, the scholarship is based on Mark 12:29-31, where Jesus gives the two most important commandments: 鈥淟ove the Lord Your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.鈥 The winner of the annual award receives an eight-semester full-tuition, room and board scholarship.

Gaura was introduced to the 蜜豆直播 campus as a child, when she attended her cousin鈥檚 graduation. 鈥淚 was blown away,鈥 she remembered. 鈥淭he campus was beautiful and my experience left an outstanding impression on me.鈥

When she came back for a visit in the fall of her senior year of high school, 鈥渕y experience on the day I toured campus proved to me that a small, Christian university would be the best environment for me to flourish as a young adult,鈥 she stated. 鈥淭he programs at 蜜豆直播 are exactly what I need; the campus and student life are unmatched. After months of questioning and praying about future decisions, I finally felt at peace with college. I know 蜜豆直播 will provide quality academics, and opportunities to serve, and support the development of my faith.鈥

Gaura is thankful for her parents, extended family, church leaders and teachers, whose steadfast faith influenced her character. Their examples of service and her own volunteer opportunities have ignited her interest to major in psychology. 鈥淢y goal is to work with children going through various life struggles,鈥 she affirmed. 鈥淎fter spending a handful of mornings assisting a course of underclassmen at my high school, I have developed a true love for building relationships and cultivating conversations. I plan to use this experience as a catalyst for my future career: becoming a school social worker. I am so excited to couple two of my most significant passions鈥攑eople and education鈥攊nto a daily occupation.鈥

Even as a member of a competitive dance team, Gaura still focuses on serving and learning. 鈥淚t provides a perfect outlet for me to exercise, make friends, and understand the importance of time management,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淥ver the past couple of years, I have also been able to utilize my time at the studio to mentor younger dancers and assist with elementary dance classes. While competitions may sometimes be overwhelming, I truly value the memories I have made and the friendships I have grown. My studio has played a major role in my character development over the past six years.鈥

Additionally, she鈥檚 contributed her time to help with club projects and build relationships. As president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), she formulated activities to welcome and engage new students and facilitated group conversations and devotionals. In DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), she was vice president of hospitality and helped to promote club engagement, mentor aspiring club leaders and organize meetings.

Serving as vice president of Students in Action, she arranged a school-wide book drive to enhance literacy levels, donating over 1,000 books to a local non-profit organization. She also helped with one of her favorite events: the Young Athletes Expo. 鈥淭his is a district-wide Special Olympics for preschool and elementary-aged children,鈥 Gaura described. 鈥淚 thoroughly enjoy this experience, as it allows me to mingle with students from a gamut of schools, while also spending an entire day encouraging, supporting, and serving students.鈥

Rachel Gaura, second from right, helped set up for the Spring Hill High School Derby Day.

At her church, Gaura also uses her communication skills as a co-leader on the youth ministry welcome team. She ensures each first-time visitor feels a sense of belonging and inclusion during their time at her church. She also attends a small group Bible study.

鈥淏eing a Tucker Scholar will allow me opportunities to grow in my faith, be challenged academically, and develop skills to fulfill my purpose,鈥 she observed. 鈥淚 am so thankful to celebrate this opportunity and all of the prayers it has answered. This was the final confirmation I needed to commit to taking this step in God鈥檚 plan for my life. I am looking forward to finding my place in the 蜜豆直播 community, as well as serving and growing alongside each new friend I make.鈥

Senior at Spring Hill High School Honored for her Service, Leadership and 蜜豆直播

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜 senior from Spring Hill High School in Chapin, S.C., is the 2022 winner of 蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 most prestigious scholarship. In a surprise presentation at her home, members of the 蜜豆直播 University Admissions Office along with Mac the Mascot brought the celebration to Rachel Gaura and her family. She is the winner of the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength Scholarship, which is presented annually to a candidate who exemplifies the principles and values representative of the GWU community.

Rachel was overjoyed with the news. 鈥淚 am so excited to be the next Tucker Scholar, and I am beyond thankful for the generosity of the Tucker family,鈥 Rachel shared. 鈥淚 look forward to embracing the service and leadership opportunities this scholarship will provide.鈥

Rachel was one of 188 high school seniors who applied for the scholarship and among the 33 finalists invited to campus for interviews. These finalists represented seven states鈥攁s close as Shelby, N.C., and as far away as Fishers, Ind.鈥攁nd their average GPA was 4.21.

鈥淲e had a really, really strong pool of finalists this year, and I hope that each of these outstanding students ultimately chooses 蜜豆直播 to be their college home,鈥 explained GWU President Dr. William Downs. 鈥淎s was the case with our winners in previous years, our selection committee knew from the moment we began our conversation with Rachel Gaura that she was special鈥ndeed, exceptional. Rachel鈥檚 academic record is stellar, but more importantly she shows every sign of being the kind of high-character person that we were seeking. She鈥檚 authentic, she鈥檚 eager to serve, and her positivity is contagious. What a great match for GWU!鈥

The Tucker Scholarship was established in 2019 by Carolyn and Robert Tucker, longtime University benefactors. Their intent was to provide an award based on Mark 12:29-31, where Jesus gives the two most important commandments: 鈥淟ove the Lord Your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.鈥

The winner receives an eight-semester full-tuition, room and board scholarship. The Tuckers are the founders and owners of Shoe Show Inc. in Concord, N.C. In 2010, they gave the University $5.5 million to help build the Tucker Student Center. In the past, Mrs. Tucker explained that Mark 12:29-31 is her life prayer for her family. To remind her children and their spouses, her grandchildren and future Tucker generations of her request, Mrs. Tucker gave them plaques inscribed with the scripture. Replicas of the plaque also hang at entrances to every building on the GWU campus, and recipients of the scholarship receive their own copy of the plaque.

Members of the GWU Admissions Staff who presented the
award to Rachel Gaura, along with Mac the Mascot were,
from left, Enrollment Marketing Specialist Caroline
Hamby, Associate Director of Admissions Molly Allison
and Vice President for Enrollment Management Dean
Clark.

In her scholarship essay, Rachel explained how Mark 12:29-31 applied to her life. 鈥淭he four pillars expressed in Mark 12:30 have developed a significant role in my striving to follow the lead of my elders, while also embracing the unique talents the Father has given me. As I encounter a new season of life at Gardner Webb University, I intend to expound upon my understanding of this verse as a cornerstone in regards to my relationship with the Lord.鈥

To be eligible for the scholarship, recipients must first be nominated by a minister, teacher, guidance counselor or community leader who is unrelated to the student. Rachel was recommended by a science teacher at Spring Hill High School, Lauren Brown. She described Rachel as a leader, creative, intelligent, and culturally aware. 鈥淎n honor student at Spring Hill High School (SHHS), Rachel has not only maintained outstanding grades, but she has also remained an academic leader throughout her high school career and has done so while taking the most rigorous course load available, serving as a volunteer on many committees and honing many extracurricular skills,鈥 Brown affirmed. 鈥淪he has led projects such as the book drive 鈥楻ockin鈥 for Books,鈥 served through mission work for the Connie Maxwell Children鈥檚 Home, and installed a 鈥楲ittle Library鈥 through her leadership classes. She is a member of the American Sign Language Club and the current president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.鈥

With the scholarship application, students also include references. In his letter supporting Rachel, Josh Bridges, a math teacher and SHHS Entrepreneurial Academy Dean, noted that Rachel is a member of 10 clubs. 鈥淩achel wants to succeed in everything she does and is the epitome of what an educator would want in a student,鈥 Bridges described. 鈥淪he is someone who is willing to take on leadership roles around the school and community, so it seems natural for her to apply for a scholarship with these standards and expectations.鈥

Rachel鈥檚 other reference was her AP United States History teacher Jennifer Garnett who wrote, 鈥淪he is a selfless young woman who many times puts others and their needs before hers to ensure their success. Her maturity and strong sense of responsibility guides her to great achievements as well.鈥

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he deadline to nominate a high school senior for 蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 most prestigious award鈥攖he Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength Scholarship鈥攊s Oct. 31. Established by the Tucker family, long-time supporters of the University, this eight-semester full-tuition/room and board scholarship, is awarded annually to one high school student who best exemplifies the attributes highlighted in Mark 12:30-31: 鈥淟ove the Lord Your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.鈥

A candidate should be a current high school senior who is a first-year applicant at 蜜豆直播 University for a bachelor鈥檚 program. Nominations should describe the applicant鈥檚 depth of character, faith, and service-driven life.

From left, the first recipient of the Tucker Scholarship, Leah Carpenter, receives a plaque inscribed with Mark 12:30-31 from Carolyn and Lisa Tucker. This top GWU scholarship is made possible by the generous support of the Tucker family, who exemplify these same principles and values in their personal and professional lives

In a recent with 蜜豆直播 President William Downs, the first three Tucker Scholars each said they were humbled at being chosen for the honor. Nominated for the various ways they had served in their communities, they continue to serve in different ways on the GWU Campus. Leah Carpenter, the first Tucker Scholar, was nominated by her youth pastor, who said that Carpenter helped everyone in the church and community, and 鈥渉er love and her light just radiates.鈥 A native of Stanley, N.C., Carpenter demonstrates kindness and compassion as she works in her clinical assignments for nursing.

Kyndal Jackson, the second recipient of the Tucker Scholarship, poses with her family at the presentation.

Kyndal Jackson, of Gaffney, S.C., the second recipient of the Tucker Scholarship, was also nominated for participating in several community service clubs and projects at school and in the community. Her school counselor described her as a person who is passionate about her walk and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She enjoys participating in mission trips and ministry opportunities.

The newest Tucker Scholar, Kylee Morris, of Morehead City, N.C., was one of 160 students nominated last year. Her coach described how Morris gave up her position on the varsity basketball squad, to play with the JV team, because the younger team didn鈥檛 have enough players. Since arriving on campus, Morris has made many friends as a member of the 蜜豆直播 Marching Bulldogs.
