Gardner-Webb Opens New Academic Year with Energy, Upgrades, and Community Spirit

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 蜜豆直播 campus marked the start of the 2025-鈥26 academic year by celebrating nine new faculty members, incoming first-year students, and major improvements across campus. While new students enjoyed a weekend of orientation fun and learning about their new college home, returning students came back to updated living spaces, athletic facilities and academic areas.

The Runnin鈥 Bulldogs will enjoy new turf on the football field and a new basketball court in the Paul Porter Arena. A major refurbishment of Nanney Hall included new flooring and furniture. Other residence halls and apartments also received new furniture. The Mac Lab in the Department of Communication, Art and Design is equipped with new computers and technology. These enhancements to campus life were made possible by a record-breaking $1.85 million gift from parents of a recent 蜜豆直播 graduate.

In addition, the University鈥檚 dining partners, Aramark, introduced enhancements in The Caf and Tucker Student Center. Along with mobile ordering and Starbucks connect, new offerings include more high-protein and allergen-friendly food options; changes to Bo鈥檚 in Dover Campus Center; and reusable to-go containers.

Beyond these physical improvements, Interim 蜜豆直播 President Nate Evans established a theme for the year, 鈥淥ne Webb.鈥 Each faculty and staff member received a GW T-shirt with the statement and wore their shirts on Aug. 20, the first day of classes. Also, the day began with Evans and first lady Brittany Evans hosting 鈥淕rounds for Connection.鈥 They gave out free coffee and a few directions to first-year students. The University鈥檚 live mascot, Bo, joined the event to received pets from students, faculty and staff.

鈥淭he start of a new academic year always brings great energy to 蜜豆直播, and this year is no exception,鈥 Evans observed. 鈥淲ith our theme of 鈥極ne Webb,鈥 we celebrate the unity of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and look forward to a year of academic excellence, spiritual growth, and new opportunities to live out our mission. Together, we will continue building on our strengths and writing the next chapter of the 蜜豆直播 story.鈥

Valerie Mancipe

During the four days of Orientation, first-year students developed friendships while participating in a variety of activities, including an ice cream social, worship services, entertainment, games, food, and sweet bingo. They also started learning how to transition to college life in their University 111 class, a requirement for all first-year students. Led by a faculty or staff member and a peer leader/mentor, these classes help new students approach academics through a Christian worldview, and develop skills to succeed in life during and after GWU.

Valerie Mancipe, a first-year commuter student, appreciates the warm welcome she鈥檚 received from 蜜豆直播. 鈥淚 live in Forest City, N.C., and I do about 30 minutes of driving to get here every day,鈥 she affirmed. 鈥淢y siblings and my cousins all went here before, and they gave me really good recommendations. I like that the classrooms are small enough to where you feel comfortable asking questions. I like the peer leaders; we meet with them three times a week. Everyone is really nice and helps you out with, you know, where your classes are and what you need to do.鈥

Allie Johnson

A business major, she will use this year to narrow her focus. 鈥淚 want to solidify a specific kind of route to take with business, because it’s such like a big, broad field, and I’m taking accounting classes, maybe marketing,鈥 she shared. 鈥淚’m pretty sure I’ll find something because all the teachers here are very passionate about what they teach.鈥

Serving as a peer leader for the first time this year, Allie Johnson, of Bakersfield, N.C., is a history education major in her second year at 蜜豆直播. 鈥淢y favorite thing so far about this first week and being a peer leader is helping my students find community and helping them get plugged in to different clubs and organizations, so they have a sense of belonging going into the first six weeks, which is crucial for them,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淢y expectations for myself, this year are to get more involved and meet new people.鈥

Jamari Nicholson

Jamari Nicholson, a sports management major from Matthews, N.C., also described the welcome he鈥檚 received and his goals for the year ahead. 鈥淓verybody, really just brings you in with open arms, so I think that is really cool,鈥 he assessed. 鈥淚 want to just start getting out in the community, start helping, especially with my major in sports management, start helping out the sports and meet new people and make connections.鈥

During his time at Husson, Welch managed various offices, and realigned the budget process and schedule to better match the financial aid and student enrollment timeline. Service Remembers the Lives of Those who Died in Military Service to Their Country

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he Memorial Day Observance at 蜜豆直播 University on May 23 featured retired Navy Commander John E. 鈥淛ES鈥 Sutton as the featured speaker. A 1976 alumnus, Sutton presented a brief history of Memorial Day. He noted, in particular, the stories of courage and sacrifice that impact his reflective approach to the day.

Each year, the University holds the service to remember the lives of those who have died in military service to their country. The national Memorial Day observance dates back to 1868 when Americans started gathering in their communities to decorate soldiers鈥 graves and pay tribute to their fallen heroes. The day was established as a federal holiday in 1971.

In his remarks, Interim 蜜豆直播 President Nate Evans observed, 鈥淭oday we honor the brave men and women who laid down their lives in service to their country鈥攐rdinary citizens who performed extraordinary acts of courage. Their sacrifices have shaped our history and safeguarded the freedoms we so often take for granted. Let us carry their legacy forward not just in ceremony but in how we live, how we serve and how we remember them.鈥

The invocation was led by Vice President for Christian Life and Service and University Chaplain Dr. Josh Parrott. 蜜豆直播 student Zander Bryant sung the national anthem. Adjunct Instructor and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Dr. Jim Rennie led the Responsive Reading of Psalm 67:1-7.

Sutton talked about the soldiers who had given their lives in service to their country from American patriots of the Revolutionary War, Nathan Hale and the Over Mountain Men, to those who died during battles in Belgium during World War I and on the sea during World War II. 鈥淲e want to honor those who fought for our freedom,鈥 Sutton affirmed. 鈥淎nother responsibility we have is to teach each other and the next generation about those sacrifices.鈥

He invited those in attendance to observe the 鈥淣ational Moment of Remembrance鈥 that happens every year on Memorial Day. At 3 p.m. local time, Americans are asked to pause wherever they are for one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States.

Sutton earned a degree in mathematics from 蜜豆直播. He grew up in Brazil, where his parents served as missionaries for the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1972, Sutton left his home in Rio de Janeiro to attend college in America. He met his wife, Rosie, at GWU, and they were married in 1976.

During the summer of 1975, Sutton applied for a commission in the U.S. Navy to work as a nuclear engineer. He enlisted in October 1975, attended Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island, and received his commission in November 1976. He retired from active duty in 2005 while stationed at the NATO headquarters at Brunssum, the Netherlands. He continued working as a government contractor until he fully retired and permanently moved to Elizabethton, Tenn., in 2009. The Suttons have four children and ten grandchildren.

After Sutton鈥檚 remarks, Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose conducted a Remembrance of the Fallen. She rang the bell 21 times, the highest military honor to those who died defending freedom and democracy. Afterward, Associate Vice President of Marketing Wilson Brooks played Taps.

Evans gave closing remarks, and Associate Minister for Community Engagement and Athletic Ministries Isaiah Crawford said the benediction.

University Awards its 25,000th Bachelor鈥檚 Degree During Spring Commencement Ceremony

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 University hosted its Spring Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. Families and guests celebrated the achievements of nearly 500 students in traditional undergraduate, online, and graduate programs of study.

蜜豆直播 University Interim President Nate Evans welcomed everyone and noted the significant milestone that would be achieved in the course of the evening. 鈥淭his very special graduation ceremony is the latest in the 120-year history of our distinguished institution,鈥 Evans expressed. 鈥淎nd we are so pleased, so proud, and so excited that you are with us this evening to celebrate together! This year marks a special moment, we will be awarding our 25,000th bachelor鈥檚 degree during tonight鈥檚 ceremony.鈥

Evans continued, 鈥淭o all of our graduates who are here and ready to receive your degrees, I offer you my personal congratulations. You鈥檝e accomplished something that only a small percentage of the population ever does. Through perseverance, hard work, and determination, you鈥檝e proven that you can set a goal and see it through. And that is no small feat.鈥

The commencement program also included remarks and greetings from the President of the Student Government Association, Paul McElearney, and Board of Trustees Chair the Rev. Dr. M. Lamont Littlejohn Jr.

The featured speaker was Skip Allen, lead pastor at Hope Community Church in Shelby, N.C. A graduate of Crest High School in Shelby, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biblical studies from Liberty University and a Master of Arts in religion with a concentration in evangelism and church planting. Hope Community Church is a growing multi-site church where people gather each week to worship, grow in their faith, and reach their communities with the hope of Jesus.

Skip Allen, lead pastor at Hope Community Church in Shelby, N.C., was the featured speaker

His wife, Jena, is a two-time graduate of 蜜豆直播 and has dedicated 17 years to serving mothers and newborns as a labor and delivery nurse at Atrium Cleveland in Shelby. The Allens have five children.

Allen focused his comments on navigating the road ahead. He encouraged graduates to follow the advice of King Solomon in Proverbs 3:5-6: 鈥淭rust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.鈥

He labeled these two verses as the 鈥渟trategy for life,鈥 because they list three ways to trust God: correctly, completely and confidently. 鈥淚t says, 鈥業n all your ways acknowledge Him,鈥欌 Allen related. 鈥淭hat doesn鈥檛 mean just say His name鈥攊t means know Him, because the more you know God, the more you鈥檒l trust Him.

And the more you trust Him, the more you鈥檒l see Him directing your path. The Hebrew word 鈥榓cknowledge鈥 means to know deeply, personally, relationally.鈥

Allen concluded by saying, 鈥淕raduates, don鈥檛 just go out and make a living鈥攇o out and make a life out of trusting the God who made you. And, as you walk into a future full of both uncertainty and opportunity鈥攏ever forget that you have a God who is calling you to trust him. Correctly. Completely. Confidently. Because He knows the way.鈥

Burch Returns to the Role he Held at His Alma Mater for 25 Seasons

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 Interim President Nate Evans has announced that Athletic Director Emeritus Chuck Burch will serve as the interim vice president of Athletics. He fills the role left vacant by Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich, who was recently named director of Athletics at the University of Akron in Ohio.

A 蜜豆直播 alumnus, Burch retired from GWU in 2022 after serving 25 seasons as the vice president of Athletics. He spearheaded the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs move into NCAA Division I athletics in 2000, and full membership in the Big South Conference in 2008. Burch is a well-respected member of the NCAA Division I athletics community. In the past, he served as a member of the FCS Playoff Selection Committee and in a variety of roles at both the national and conference levels.

Chuck Burch

Evans noted that Burch鈥檚 experience at 蜜豆直播 and in the conference will help the University navigate this season of change. 鈥淲e are grateful that Chuck Burch has agreed to return as interim athletic director during this important time,鈥 Evans asserted. 鈥淐huck brings seasoned leadership and invaluable insight to the role. Most importantly, his enduring love for and understanding of 蜜豆直播 University make him uniquely suited to guide our athletics program through this transition. His presence ensures continuity and stability as we conduct a thorough search for our next athletic director.鈥

Burch appreciates the opportunity to assist his alma mater and former department. 鈥淚 am honored that Nate reached out and asked me to serve as the interim VP for Athletics,鈥 he stated. 鈥淚 have so many wonderful memories from my time at 蜜豆直播, both as a student-athlete and during my time here previously as the VP for Athletics. This opportunity allows me to give back to the University and offer my assistance to the athletics department in their time of need.鈥

Growth was a key theme during Burch鈥檚 time at 蜜豆直播, with seven varsity sports added during his tenure. 蜜豆直播 student-athletes also excelled in the classroom, putting together a streak of 14 academic years of a combined departmental GPA of 3.0 or better. That academic effort produced numerous team and individual academic achievements at the conference, regional and national level.

During his charge, 蜜豆直播 saw 15 teams win conference titles at the Division I level, in addition to numerous individual honors鈥攔anging from All-America and All-Conference recognition to conference titles and national tournament berths. The University also constructed several major facilities during Burch鈥檚 tenure, including John Henry Moss Stadium and Bill Masters Field for baseball, Brinkley Family Stadium for softball, the 蜜豆直播 Football Center and Spangler Stadium renovation, Greene-Harbison Soccer Stadium, tennis courts and a major renovation to 蜜豆直播鈥檚 swim facility.

Burch graduated from Independence (N.C.) High before enrolling at 蜜豆直播 as a student. He played football and tennis for GWU before graduating with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in social science in 1980. He went on to earn a master鈥檚 degree from Eastern Kentucky before beginning his athletics career as an assistant sports information director in 1982 at Liberty University. From there, Burch took over the lead role in sports information at Liberty, was elevated to assistant athletics director in 1984 and associate athletics director in 1988. He served as director of athletics at Liberty from 1991-1997 before returning to Boiling Springs.

Burch and his wife Franki raised their three children, Travis, Danielle and Amy, in Boiling Springs.

Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. John Whitaker Relates Story of Sacrifice

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 University faculty and staff, along with members of the community, gathered in front of Hamrick Hall on May 24 to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives serving their country. In his speech, retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. John Whitaker shared a personal story to remember his friends who gave their lives on a mission to save others.

蜜豆直播 President William M. Downs underscored the significance of Memorial Day, saying it is not about backyard barbecues or clearance sales. 鈥淢emorial Day is a solemn responsibility to carry out our lives in ways that would have made those who lost their lives proud,鈥 Downs affirmed. 鈥淥ur own daily stresses and struggles seem small, so very small in comparison to those struggles endured by the men and women that we have gathered to honor 鈥 Those men and women from our own community, who answered the call to defend freedom; those men and women from our own community, who overcame fear to face down evil; those from our own community, who boarded ships or planes or in some other way raced toward conflict rather than shrinking from it.鈥

Vice President for Christian Life and Service and University Chaplain Dr. Josh Parrott gave the welcome and invocation. Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Dr. Aaron Rice sang the national anthem. Vice President for Advancement Nate Evans lead the responsive reading from Psalm 67:1-7.

Downs introduced Whitaker, a native of Gastonia, N.C., and serves as discipleship pastor for City Church, a multiple campus church of over 3,500 members. He is also executive director of Hope4Gaston, a Christian non-profit that over the past 10 years has provided food to over 500,000 individuals, remodeled over 800 houses for families in need, and operates a free clothing store that has served over 250,000 individuals.

He served 25 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2011. Whitaker spent 10 years of his military service flying in support of America鈥檚 War on Terror. He has accumulated over 2,500 hours of total flight time as a C-130H3 Flight Engineer. Whitaker has over 1,000 combat hours flying missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also has over 500 hours of flight time dedicated to humanitarian missions involving hurricane relief, providing food in developing countries and firefighting missions in the Western United States.

The story that Whitaker told occurred during a firefighting mission in the U.S. He and other members of his unit had just returned home from Afghanistan. Four of his friends were called to fight fires in South Dakota. The aircraft was stuck by a microburst and all of them died. One of his friends had just welcomed his fourth child, a one-month-old daughter with three older brothers.

Through his somber words, Whitaker also provided hope. 鈥淚 know an Air Force Squadron with this motto, 鈥楾his I do that others may live,鈥欌 Whitaker related. 鈥淚 believe that if Jesus had a tattoo, that’s what it would have said, in Hebrew, of course. Mottos are inspiring until the gravity of the situation becomes a reality. So, what are we that are left behind to do? We remember. We honor. We stay in the fight. My dead friends stayed in the fight, so others may live. Through this tragic story of sacrifice by my friends, I am reminded of even a greater sacrifice. I would like to offer today, a perspective grounded in the Christian faith, which has long been a source of comfort strength, hope for many in times of loss and remembrance.鈥

He continued, 鈥淥n this Memorial Day celebration, we are called not only to remember those who have fallen but also to honor the legacy of the living ones, and the lives, and the purpose and integrity of those left behind. We are reminded that freedom is not free. In the face of this sobering reality, we must ask ourselves, 鈥楬ow can we best honor their memory?鈥 We must commit to living lives that reflect the values which they fought and died for … let us also stand in hope. Our Christian faith assures us that death is not the end. And those who have died in Christ are now in his eternal embrace.鈥

After Whitaker鈥檚 remarks and devotion, Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose conducted the Remembrance of The Fallen: Silence is observed as the bell tolls 21 times, the highest military honor to those who died defending our freedom and democracy. Associate Vice President of Marketing Wilson Brooks played Taps. Downs gave closing remarks, and Associate Minister for the University for Pastoral Care Stacy Simmons offered the benediction.
