Griffin was the first student to receive a grant from the GWU Undergraduate Research Scholar Program. Working with his mentor, Professor of Biology Dr. David Judge, Griffin compared two methods of extracting the chemicals from ginger ales. He won the first-place presentation prize for chemistry at the North Carolina Academy of Science鈥檚 annual meeting. He also received the Stefka Eddins Undergraduate Research Award from GWU for excellence in a student/faculty collaborative project. Griffin earned his Ph.D. in chemistry in 2018 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Judge helped me to sharpen my skills in experimentation, and under his guidance, I learned how to become an independent scientist,鈥� he concluded. 鈥淗e helped me to critically think about a problem and ask questions about what interested me. Also, my professors were always available outside of class to answer my questions. Courses at GWU challenged me to become more independent, and learn about things that I was interested in, not just because they were required by my professors.鈥�
