Biography

Dr. Elizabeth Amato is an Associate Professor of Political Science for the Department of Social Science. Her teaching responsibilities include courses connected with American politics and political theory such as Constitutional Law, Presidency & Congress, American Political Parties, American Politics, and Modern Political Philosophy. She contributed a chapter to A Political Companion to Walker Percy and has published an article on Tom Wolfe鈥檚 novels in Perspective on Political Science.

Dr. Amato is the faculty adviser for the Pre-Law Society, a club that helps students explore and prepare for a career in law.

Dr. Amato earned her B.A. at Berry College (Rome, GA), her M.A. and Ph. D. at Baylor University (Waco, TX) in political science. The title of her dissertation is The Pursuit of Happiness and the American Regime, which takes a politics and literature approach to understanding the pursuit of happiness. Before coming to 蜜豆直播 University, she taught at James Madison College at Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI).

Dr. Amato鈥檚 scholarly interests include the study of happiness, ancient and modern political thought (particularly, Aristotle, Thucydides, Machiavelli, Locke, and Nietzsche), politics, literature and film, American political thought, the American presidency, constitutional law (particularly, executive detention cases, the Taft Court, and 14th Amendment Due Process cases), and political revolutions. Her non-academic past times include drinking coffee, making frequent references to Plato and Aristotle in conversation, watching action films especially from the 1980s, the study of ancient warfare, baking and candy-making, reading children鈥檚 books, watching cartoons, growing herbs and container gardening, packing bento boxes, feeling smug for using reusable bags, feeling guilty for not composting more, running, finding new ways to add jalapenos and serrano peppers to food, and reading poetry on Sundays.

Dr. Bass joined the 蜜豆直播 faculty in 1995 as an Associate Professor of Mathematics. In years 1997 – 2007 he served as the chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. His published mathematics research has concerned integral representations of univalent functions.  He earned the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1988 under the direction of John Pfaltzgraff and Joseph Cima.

Biography

Dr. Berry came to 蜜豆直播 in 1999 from the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague, where he taught missiology courses and worked directly with church leaders in Europe and the Middle East. He has served as a church pastor, missionary, author and professor during his thirty-six year ministry.  He has traveled to more than fifty countries in five continents and published two books.

Lisa retired from Cliffside Elementary School, having served as a physical education teacher from 1990 to 2019. She has also worked as an adjunct for GWU. She has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee and a Master of Science in Physical Education from 蜜豆直播. She is a National Board Certified Teacher. She enjoys being outdoors, sports and traveling.

Jennifer Johnson Buckner is Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Professor of English and Coordinator of the Composition Studies program at 蜜豆直播 University in Boiling Springs, NC. She earned her BA in English Education and MA in English at University of North Carolina at Charlotte and her PhD in English Studies with an emphasis on Writing, Rhetoric, and New Media Studies at Old Dominion University.

Her career started teaching 9-12 English in Rowan County, NC where she was Teacher of the Year for West Rowan High and Runner-Up for Northeast Regional Teacher of the Year (2003). Dr. Buckner joined the faculty at GWU in 2007, where she started teaching writing and directing the Learning Assistance Program; later, she directed the Writing Center for 8yrs. While at Gardner Webb, she has been awarded with the Rising Star Award (2010); Scholarship Award (2005); and Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award (2017). She served as Chair of the English department (2017-2021) before assuming her current role as Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Buckner teaches classes in undergraduate and graduate English programs related to writing, rhetoric, and new media studies, where she also advises students completing capstone projects at each level. Her scholarship focuses on writing pedagogy, semiotics, multimodality, soundwriting and accessibility. She has served as part of the editorial collective for the Journal of Undergraduate Multimedia Projects (JUMP+) since 2019, reviewing submissions by undergraduate students.
