First-Year Nursing Major Shares How Donor Generosity Shapes her Experience

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gifts made on �۶�ֱ�� University’s Double Dawg Day on Thursday, April 16, directly support the scholarships that help students succeed in the classroom and beyond. On this day, the GWU community will unite to support scholarships, academic programs, athletics and the hands-on experiences that shape the student journey.

Such generosity is especially meaningful to first-year nursing major Amber Jimenez. Her scholarship allows her to advance toward her goals with confidence. She hopes donors will continue to support students like her. “Your donations, big or small, have a powerful impact and influence on all the students at �۶�ֱ��,” Jimenez emphasized. “The donations allow students like me to further our educations and grow as people.”

Jimenez first learned about �۶�ֱ�� when representatives visited her high school. She said the University’s size, location and emphasis on hands-on learning appealed to her. Once on campus, she discovered a faculty invested in her success. “My professors are very supportive and helpful, giving me words of encouragement,” she praised. “Every faculty and staff member that I have met at �۶�ֱ�� has had an impact on me.”

Among the faculty members who have shaped her experience, Jimenez said Emily Coggins, nursing instructor and clinical coordinator, has been especially instrumental. “She has taught me that although I am in the nursing program, I should still be able to enjoy and not miss out on important and special things in my life,” Jimenez reflected.

Her passion for nursing comes from a long-standing desire to serve others. “I want to help people and make a positive impact in this world,” Jimenez stated. “Becoming a nurse will help me reach that goal.” She plans to pursue a career as either a nurse practitioner (NP) or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) and hopes to continue her education in graduate school.

Jimenez said she has also found meaningful support in her closest friendships. “My biggest support at �۶�ֱ�� has been my roommate and best friend,” she said. “Every huge milestone that I have had here at GWU, she was always there to witness it.”

One of her most meaningful experiences has been connecting with donors during Philanthropy Week. “I was able to build such a meaningful and beautiful relationship with one of the donors and to this day, we are still in contact,” Jimenez said. “I am so grateful, blessed and honored to say this school has given me several opportunities to grow into the person I have always wanted to be.”

Stories like Jimenez’s reflect the heart of Double Dawg Day—students whose opportunities, confidence and futures are strengthened by donor generosity. Campus Events Highlight the Impact of Donors on the Student Experience

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Through fun activities, storytelling, and visible reminders placed across campus, �۶�ֱ�� University will celebrate Philanthropy Week on April 13–16. The observance is designed to help students understand how philanthropy—the voluntary giving of time, talent, or financial resources to others—impacts their time at GWU. The initiative ends with Double Dawg Day, inviting alumni, families, and friends to join the GWU community in supporting students through gifts of every size.

Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Shannon Hovis helps coordinate the event. “Every gift to �۶�ֱ�� tells a story of generosity and a deep belief in our students,” Hovis asserted. “During Philanthropy Week, we celebrate the alumni, parents, and friends whose support opens doors, creates opportunities, and strengthens the �۶�ֱ�� experience for every student.”

Throughout the week, students will explore how donor generosity has influenced the spaces, programs, and opportunities available to them at GWU. Outside select buildings, signs will share the stories behind those gifts and the individuals who made them possible. These stories reflect decades of commitment to Christian higher education.

For example, the Tucker Student Center stands as a testament to the generosity of Robert and Carolyn Tucker, who offered their gift with the purpose of glorifying God. The Stewart family’s longtime support echoes their belief that a university should embody excellence, integrity, and strong Christian values. The Godbold family invested in mission-driven programs and scholarships to strengthen the University’s Christ-centered mission, while Dr. Jack and Ruby Hunt’s passion for nursing paved the way for the Hunt School of Nursing.

The Dover family and their foundation supported several campus buildings and spaces, including the John R. Dover Jr. Memorial Chapel, a cherished place of worship anchoring the University’s Christian heritage. And in the 1930s, E.B. Hamrick provided crucial support that helped sustain Boiling Springs Junior College—today’s �۶�ֱ�� University—during a time of need.

These stories—and many more—demonstrate that philanthropy touches every part of campus life and continues to provide opportunities for future generations of students.

Philanthropy Week Events

Students are invited to participate in daily activities to learn more about the donors who support �۶�ֱ�� and show their appreciation.

Monday, April 13 – Donut Forget to Thank a Donor

Outside the Caf beginning at 11:30 a.m., students can enjoy free donuts and write thank-you notes to GWU donors.

Tuesday, April 14 – Get the Scoop on Philanthropy

Free ice cream will be available on the Quad starting at 11:30 a.m. Students can also prepare for Thursday’s Double Dawg Trivia Ride.

Wednesday, April 15 – Pop into Philanthropy with the Prize Wheel

Beginning at 2 p.m. on the bottom floor of Tucker Student Center, students can spin the prize wheel and learn more about philanthropy.

Thursday, April 16 – Double Dawg Day and Double Dawg Trivia Ride

Throughout the day, students may catch a ride to class and test their knowledge of campus philanthropy for a chance to win prizes.
Double Dawg Day begins at midnight, giving supporters 24 hours to donate to the people, programs, and causes they choose, including:

24-Hour Day of Giving Strengthens the Future of Healthcare by Supporting Hands‑On Training and Student Research

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�۶�ֱ�� University will host the 11th annual Double Dawg Day on April 16, a 24-hour celebration of generosity, community, and the impact of donor support. Each year, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends come together to champion the people, programs, and priorities that strengthen the GWU student experience.

In the College of Health Sciences, donor gifts advance hands-on training and professional preparation. Dr. Tracy Arnold, the college’s dean and professor of nursing, said recent support has upgraded essential equipment—such as hospital beds, low-fidelity manikins, and exercise bikes—and helped fund student research and conference presentations.

“These resources allow students to apply classroom knowledge in practical and scholarly ways,” Arnold noted. “Every gift goes toward enhancing academic programs, student experiences, and essential resources that ultimately provide stronger career readiness and increase the confidence of graduates as they prepare to enter the workforce.”

Strengthening Nursing Readiness

Nursing students said this equipment is vital to becoming clinically prepared. Senior Abigail Henson, of Kings Mountain, N.C., shared that working with updated hospital beds and manikins prepared her for bedside care. “They provide a safe, hands-on environment to practice nursing skills,” she said. “Practicing on manikins allows me to learn and grow, ultimately shaping me into a more confident nurse who prioritizes patient safety in real-world care.”

Senior India Page, of Boiling Springs, agreed that the equipment gives students a solid foundation for clinical work. “Being able to practice skills and get comfortable with (manikins) puts me at an advantage if I’m asked to perform them on an actual patient during clinical,” she explained. Page said opportunities to practice medication administration, IV insertion, and wound care on manikins made her better prepared for real-world expectations.

Both students expressed deep gratitude for those who give on Double Dawg Day. Henson said, “Your support directly impacts my education and helps me become a safer, more competent nurse.”

Page observed that donor generosity not only strengthens student learning but also supports dedicated nursing faculty. “The School of Nursing at �۶�ֱ�� has some of the best instructors I’ve had the opportunity to learn from,” Page acknowledged. “They work endlessly to give us a solid foundation.”

Opportunities for Psychology Research

With funds from Double Dawg Day, psychology students presented their undergraduate research at the Southeastern Psychological Association Convention in Atlanta, Ga.

Donor support also creates academic opportunities for psychology majors Grace Haynie and Rachel Gaura, seniors who conducted undergraduate research and presented at the Southeastern Psychological Association Convention (SEPA).

Haynie, who plans to further her education in graduate school, described the research experience as one of the most rewarding opportunities of her �۶�ֱ�� education. She explained, “Getting to present our work at conferences, such as SEPA, made me proud of the effort we put into the research. To the donors, I say a big ‘Thank you.’ Your contributions make it possible for students like me to further my experiences and grow in my psychological knowledge. You have greatly shaped some of my favorite college memories and experiences.”

Through her participation in undergraduate research, Gaura said she developed skills that will support her as a ministry leader. “Working with both faculty and peers expanded my knowledge of psychology, while also building my confidence in working with professionals,” she noted. “These experiences strengthened my communication, critical thinking, and professionalism, all of which will be essential as I pursue ministry and work closely with youth and young adults. I feel better prepared to understand people thoughtfully, speak confidently, and lead with both knowledge and care in my future career.”

Gaura also offered her appreciation to donors. “Your generosity has truly shaped my college experience at �۶�ֱ�� and allowed me to grow both academically and personally,” she stated. “Because of your support, my studies feel meaningful and valued, and I feel encouraged knowing that someone believes in my education and future. I hope you will continue giving so other students can have the same opportunities I had.”

Practical Exercise Science Training

Exercise science students also benefit from equipment purchased with donor support. Jamiel Colón, who earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2025, will complete his Master of Science in strength and conditioning in 2026. He is also a teaching assistant in �۶�ֱ��’s Carolina Chiropractic Plus Human Performance Laboratory.

“Because of your previous generosity, our students are not just learning theory from a textbook,” Colón affirmed. “They are running real fitness tests, handling industry-standard equipment, and practicing exactly what they’ll be asked to do in collegiate, professional, and private performance settings. Your donated equipment allowed me, personally, to gain hands-on experience with diverse testing protocols, learn proper procedures, interpret data, and manage the inevitable chaos of testing days. That experience gave me a genuine competitive edge in the field of strength and conditioning and accelerated my development as a coach.”

Colón sees those same benefits continuing for current students. “The equipment you helped provide is used multiple times per week to train freshmen and upperclassmen alike,” Colón emphasized. “Freshmen are exposed early to real-world expectations and evolving industry standards, while upperclassmen refine their testing skills, deepen their data analysis abilities, and practice communicating key findings to future clients and athletes. In other words, your support is directly shaping the next generation of strength and conditioning professionals.”

He concluded, “I would strongly encourage you to give again this year, because the demand for this kind of hands-on education is only growing. Your renewed gift doesn’t just buy equipment; it creates confident, competent professionals who are truly prepared for the field. You’re investing in people, and their careers, in a way that simply wouldn’t be possible without your generosity.”

On April 16, the GWU community will come together for the 11th annual day of giving to support students through scholarships, athletic programs, academic resources, and the hands‑on experiences that help them thrive.

This year, the volleyball team is energized by the momentum of a growing program that has been shaped in meaningful ways by donor generosity. Volleyball Head Coach Alex Hinsey shared that support has been essential in creating a championship‑caliber environment for his student‑athletes.

“Donations to Gardner‑Webb volleyball have played a vital role in supporting our team’s travel for meals, hotels, and bus transportation, allowing us to compete at the highest level,” Hinsey affirmed. “Contributions also help provide high-quality team gear and uniforms, giving our athletes a strong sense of pride and unity when representing our program. In addition, donor support allows us to invest in upgraded training and performance equipment, enhancing our preparation and helping us compete at a championship level.”

Caroline Franklin a right side/outside hitter for the team is proud to be a Runnin’ Bulldog for many reasons. “The best part of being a student athlete is getting to play college athletics while going to a mission-minded school that builds students up and encourages them, while equipping them to follow the Lord in all that they do,” she reflected.

A sophomore exercise science major from Greenville, N.C., Franklin expressed her gratitude for the support the volleyball team has received on Double Dawg Day. “The day means a lot to me because it just shows the support that other people have for us and it gives us, as athletes, the confidence to perform,” she asserted. “Knowing we have support on our side in all aspects—from friends to family to alumni—it just means so much to know people are here for us and choose to support our program.”

She emphasized, “Every gift or donation to our program makes an impact and helps our program succeed in so many ways. We are grateful to have you on our team, and we hope that you will continue to support us for years to come, and as always, ‘Sko Dawgs!”

Echoing Franklin’s appreciation for the investment others make in the program, Hinsey added his thanks for the donors who will help drive the program forward this year. “We are building something special—both on and off the court,” he explained. “With a talented roster, a strong competitive schedule, and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and community, the 2026 season represents an exciting opportunity to continue elevating our play and take a meaningful step forward as a program. �۶�ֱ�� Bulldog Club Builds Momentum Under New Leadership

Director William Glover Highlights Growth, Member Engagement, and Lasting Impact on �۶�ֱ�� Student-Athletes

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—During his first five months as director of �۶�ֱ�� University Bulldog Club and Sponsorship Programs, William Glover has enthusiastically connected with devoted longtime supporters and warmly welcomed a growing circle of new members into the club.

“I’m excited to share some updates on the growth and impact of the Runnin’ Bulldog community,” Glover related. “The commitment of our Bulldog Club members is profound. The support they show helps improve the experience for GWU student-athletes through scholarships to live out their dreams.”

As �۶�ֱ�� fall athletic programs are in full swing, the Bulldog Club has made two trips to Eastern Illinois and Lindenwood with the GWU football team. Plus, club members gather for a pre-game meal for every home football game and are invited to watch the game from the Dawg Deck in Spangler Stadium.

Glover shared, “It’s great to see our members out at the athletic events, whether it’s soccer, tennis, cross country, volleyball, and more. As you know, GWU Basketball is right around the corner. We will have a Bulldog Club section on the baseline for each home game, and I encourage you to come visit with fellow Bulldog Club members.”

Because of the support they give to student-athletes, members of the Bulldog Club have priority access and receive discounts on all season ticket packages. “As a Bulldog Club member, you have a direct impact on each Division 1 team here at GWU,” Glover noted. “Every Bulldog Club member has a hand in each GWU championship.”

A membership in the Bulldog Club helps the University’s nearly 600 student-athletes earn a degree and play a sport they love. Women’s basketball player, #2 Amina Gray, a junior, noted, “The Bulldog Club has made a huge difference for me. Their support through scholarships allows me to be the best student-athlete I can be by letting me focus on my sport along with classes without the financial stress. I’m really grateful for everything they do for student-athletes like me.”

Baseball’s #15 Ryan Kennell, a senior, added his appreciation to donors. “�۶�ֱ�� has given me an opportunity of a lifetime,” he asserted. “Being able to play Division I baseball while also getting an education was always a dream of mine. This was all made possible by the generous donations made to the Bulldog Club. While we are striving for excellence on the field and in the classroom, we are all grateful for the opportunities that have been given to us.”

Ultimately, the Bulldog Club strengthens the community atmosphere on campus. “We’re not just an organization, we are family,” Glover stressed. “Every gift, membership, and show of support helps our Runnin’ bulldogs compete with passion and purpose.”

Tami Ruckman, a 1983 �۶�ֱ�� alumna and former GWU advancement officer, made a commitment to give to her alma mater in her will. She wanted to support the place that not only gave her an education, but also enriched her life with lasting friendships. “�۶�ֱ��’s impact on me and my friends went far beyond education,” Ruckman reflected. “Even after 40+ years, I talk to someone from my class every single day. We experienced something exceedingly rare and wonderful that has lasted a lifetime.”

Ruckman is also grateful for the generosity of those who made her education possible. “My parents paid for most of my education, but I will always appreciate the strangers who funded scholarships and helped lighten their financial load,” she asserted. “I want other students to have the same opportunities and experiences that my friends and I had.”

While 98% of individuals give to charities annually, fewer than 9% include a gift in their will. Yet, this simple act can have a lasting impact, ensuring that future students have access to the same education, values, and opportunities that shaped their lives. “Those of us with average incomes can often make a much larger gift through our will than we ever could with cash,” Ruckman explained. “That’s why I’m leaving a percentage of whatever remains to �۶�ֱ��, with the intent that it be used for scholarships. It’s the largest gift I’ll ever make, and it didn’t cost me a cent!”

Having a will creates peace of mind for you and the people you love. Creating a will prevents family conflict, eliminates confusion, and ensures your assets go to the people you most want to have them. It also gives your family guidance and reassurance that they can fulfill your wishes during what is likely a very difficult time for them.

Funding Awarded to the College of Health Sciences to Address Behavioral Health Needs in Rural and Underserved Areas of North Carolina

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�۶�ֱ��’s College of Health Sciences has received the University’s first federally-funded grant. Presented by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the initial award is $550,000, which is renewable for three years for a total of $2.16 million. The funding will address behavioral health needs in rural and underserved areas through the Advancing Collaborative Care, Integration, and Interprofessional Education in Rural North Carolina (ACE) project.

The purpose of the ACE project is to prepare Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) students to practice in integrated care sites and improve access to behavioral health services for North Carolina. The University’s staff and faculty worked with its grants consulting partner, McAllister & Quinn, to obtain the award.

“This grant represents a significant milestone for �۶�ֱ�� and affirms the vital role we play in addressing behavioral health disparities across our region,” affirmed Interim GWU President Nate Evans. “It also underscores the University’s commitment to improving behavioral health outcomes in rural and underserved communities. I am incredibly proud of our faculty and staff for their dedication and leadership in bringing this project to fruition.”

The proposed project will (1) build institutional infrastructure to support recruitment, teaching, and learning for a diverse clinical workforce; (2) enhance curricula and co-curricular activities to better prepare PMHNP and CMHC students to work in integrated care environments; and (3) expand clinical capacity for PMHNP and CMHC trainees in integrated care settings, with practice partners such as Atrium Health, CaroMont Behavioral Health, and Kintegra Behavioral Health.

By meeting its education and clinical objectives, the ACE project will propel the College of Health Sciences’ capacity to prepare graduates to meet urgent behavioral health service needs in North Carolina. The organization of activities throughout the project period reflects a thoughtful approach of capacity building, planning, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability. The PMHNP and CMHC students will work and learn together with preceptors and supervisors in integrated care settings, providing a high-quality learning experience.

I extend thanks to our dedicated faculty, whose leadership was instrumental in securing the grant and is vital to the successful implementation of this meaningful initiative.”

Further, �۶�ֱ�� faculty will participate in extensive professional development, so that they can better prepare students, colleagues, clinical partners, and other members of the community to meet the unmet needs of marginalized populations, especially those who have or are at-risk of developing co-occurring mental health needs and substance use disorders. This professional development targets the serious unmet needs of children, adolescents, and transitional-age youth, and will enhance the collective approach to meeting their needs in the region.

The following faculty members collaborated on the grant proposal and will lead implementation of the ACE project: Dr. Tiffany Stewart (PMHNP program coordinator), Dr. Sharon Webb (chair, CMHC program), and Dr. Charlotte Stephens (associate professor of nursing).

Donation Enhances Athletics, Residence Halls, and �۶�ֱ��

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.— �۶�ֱ�� University has received one of the largest single contributions in the last 25 years—an initial $1.75 million gift that broke previous records. Just one week later, the donors added an additional $100,000, bringing the total to $1.85 million. This transformative gift will impact all areas of campus life.

“This transformative gift is a powerful affirmation of �۶�ֱ��’s mission and the life-changing impact this institution has on our students and their families,” said Interim President Nate Evans. “It reflects not only deep gratitude but also great vision, investing in our facilities, academic programs, and student life so that �۶�ֱ�� can continue to change lives. We are incredibly grateful for this generosity and inspired by the trust it places in our future.”

The donation will go toward athletic, residential, and academic enhancements. Projects start this month to install new turf for the football field and replace the basketball court in the Paul Porter Arena. A major refurbishment of Nanney Hall is underway and various updates in other residence halls and apartments will take place over the summer. The final part of the record-breaking gift will be used to update computers, equipment, and technology needs for the Department of Communication, Art and Design.

The donors were motivated to give because they saw the positive impact that the GWU community—faculty, staff and students—had on their son’s Christian walk. “�۶�ֱ�� is a unique and rare gem in higher education,” they said. “The school has blessed our son in a variety of ways. GWU offered an environment where he could thrive and grow both professionally and spiritually. He was also instrumental in identifying certain areas that would benefit from our financial support, and we wanted to honor that as well.”

They also felt strongly about directly supporting the �۶�ֱ�� mission and encourage others to financially support the University. “God has his hand on GWU and this is evident every time we set foot on campus,” the donor said. “God’s calling to support GWU was an easy ‘YES.’ We hope that other families with the capacity to give will experience the same calling.”

With their contribution to �۶�ֱ��, they wanted to bless the people who had become friends over the last four years. “Our son developed strong relationships with his peers, academic, administrative and coaching staffs,” the parents said. “We have developed meaningful relationships with some key administrators and have enjoyed our many visits to Shelby/Boiling Springs. We feel a real connection to GWU, and it’s all because of the people.”

Upgrades to Nanney and other residence halls will directly impact the daily lives of �۶�ֱ�� students, observed Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose. “I am deeply grateful for the generous support of our donors,” she affirmed. “We are excited about the transformation this will bring. The investment in new residence hall furniture is more than just a physical upgrade—it is an investment in the comfort, well-being, and community experience of our students. These refreshed living spaces will enhance students’ ability to rest, study, and connect with others, helping to create a true home away from home.”

The turf and basketball court will provide a foundation to improve the student-athletes’ experience. Interim Vice President of Athletics Chuck Burch noted the existing football turf was installed in 2014. “Ordinarily, turf fields last between eight to 10 years, so our field has held up well considering how much we have used it,” Burch noted. “Replacing the turf and shock pad under the turf allows us to provide our student-athletes the safest environment possible.”

Head Football Coach Cris Reisert also expressed his gratitude to the donors. “The new turf football field is a huge blessing for our program,” he emphasized. “This gift provides a state-of-the-art turf field that our players can use daily to help improve their craft in practice or compete for conference championships in games.”

Additionally, Burch explained the need for a new basketball court. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are playing on the same surface that has been in the Paul Porter Arena since the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center was built in 1982. “After multiple sanding and refinishes, there are numerous dead spots throughout the court,” he stated.

Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jeremy Luther added, “This gift will give our student-athletes a sense of pride and encouragement to continue striving to be the best they can be. It’s great to see the investment our donors and administration have made in making this new floor a reality.”

The equipment for the Department of Communication, Art and Design will support numerous academic programs. Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Jennifer Buckner assessed the gift’s impact. “This lab provides industry-standard technology that will support photography, videography and digital designs in a tech-forward learning environment, preparing students for future careers,” Buckner said. “We are excited to see how this lab enhances department strengths, such as our sports and commercial photography or our student-produced films for the International Real to Reel Festival.”
