First-Year Nursing Major Shares How Donor Generosity Shapes her Experience

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擥ifts made on 蜜豆直播 University鈥檚 Double Dawg Day on Thursday, April 16, directly support the scholarships that help students succeed in the classroom and beyond. On this day, the GWU community will unite to support scholarships, academic programs, athletics and the hands-on experiences that shape the student journey.

Such generosity is especially meaningful to first-year nursing major Amber Jimenez. Her scholarship allows her to advance toward her goals with confidence. She hopes donors will continue to support students like her. 鈥淵our donations, big or small, have a powerful impact and influence on all the students at 蜜豆直播,鈥 Jimenez emphasized. 鈥淭he donations allow students like me to further our educations and grow as people.鈥

Jimenez first learned about 蜜豆直播 when representatives visited her high school. She said the University鈥檚 size, location and emphasis on hands-on learning appealed to her. Once on campus, she discovered a faculty invested in her success. 鈥淢y professors are very supportive and helpful, giving me words of encouragement,鈥 she praised. 鈥淓very faculty and staff member that I have met at 蜜豆直播 has had an impact on me.鈥

Among the faculty members who have shaped her experience, Jimenez said Emily Coggins, nursing instructor and clinical coordinator, has been especially instrumental. 鈥淪he has taught me that although I am in the nursing program, I should still be able to enjoy and not miss out on important and special things in my life,鈥 Jimenez reflected.

Her passion for nursing comes from a long-standing desire to serve others. 鈥淚 want to help people and make a positive impact in this world,鈥 Jimenez stated. 鈥淏ecoming a nurse will help me reach that goal.鈥 She plans to pursue a career as either a nurse practitioner (NP) or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) and hopes to continue her education in graduate school.

Jimenez said she has also found meaningful support in her closest friendships. 鈥淢y biggest support at 蜜豆直播 has been my roommate and best friend,鈥 she said. 鈥淓very huge milestone that I have had here at GWU, she was always there to witness it.鈥

One of her most meaningful experiences has been connecting with donors during Philanthropy Week. 鈥淚 was able to build such a meaningful and beautiful relationship with one of the donors and to this day, we are still in contact,鈥 Jimenez said. 鈥淚 am so grateful, blessed and honored to say this school has given me several opportunities to grow into the person I have always wanted to be.鈥

Stories like Jimenez鈥檚 reflect the heart of Double Dawg Day鈥攕tudents whose opportunities, confidence and futures are strengthened by donor generosity. As the 蜜豆直播 community prepares for April 16, each gift helps ensure that more students can learn, grow and pursue their goals with the support they need to thrive.

Campus Events Highlight the Impact of Donors on the Student Experience

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳hrough fun activities, storytelling, and visible reminders placed across campus, 蜜豆直播 University will celebrate Philanthropy Week on April 13鈥16. The observance is designed to help students understand how philanthropy鈥攖he voluntary giving of time, talent, or financial resources to others颅鈥攊mpacts their time at GWU. The initiative ends with Double Dawg Day, inviting alumni, families, and friends to join the GWU community in supporting students through gifts of every size.

Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Shannon Hovis helps coordinate the event. 鈥淓very gift to 蜜豆直播 tells a story of generosity and a deep belief in our students,鈥 Hovis asserted. 鈥淒uring Philanthropy Week, we celebrate the alumni, parents, and friends whose support opens doors, creates opportunities, and strengthens the 蜜豆直播 experience for every student.鈥

Throughout the week, students will explore how donor generosity has influenced the spaces, programs, and opportunities available to them at GWU. Outside select buildings, signs will share the stories behind those gifts and the individuals who made them possible. These stories reflect decades of commitment to Christian higher education.

hamrick hall business day

For example, the Tucker Student Center stands as a testament to the generosity of Robert and Carolyn Tucker, who offered their gift with the purpose of glorifying God. The Stewart family鈥檚 longtime support echoes their belief that a university should embody excellence, integrity, and strong Christian values. The Godbold family invested in mission-driven programs and scholarships to strengthen the University鈥檚 Christ-centered mission, while Dr. Jack and Ruby Hunt鈥檚 passion for nursing paved the way for the Hunt School of Nursing.

The Dover family and their foundation supported several campus buildings and spaces, including the John R. Dover Jr. Memorial Chapel, a cherished place of worship anchoring the University鈥檚 Christian heritage. And in the 1930s, E.B. Hamrick provided crucial support that helped sustain Boiling Springs Junior College鈥攖oday鈥檚 蜜豆直播 University鈥攄uring a time of need.

Student Voices Highlight How Gifts Fuel Calling, Formation and Future Ministry Leadership

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擜s 蜜豆直播 University prepares to celebrate the 11th annual Double Dawg Day on April 16, the 24-hour giving initiative continues to demonstrate its power to expand opportunities for ministry preparation and transform the lives of School of Divinity students. Donor generosity鈥攖hrough scholarships, program support and global ministry opportunities鈥攑lays a central role in equipping emerging Christian leaders for service around the world.

Dr. Jim McConnell

Interim Dean and Professor of New Testament Interpretation Dr. Jim McConnell said Double Dawg Day remains essential to the School of Divinity’s mission. “The funds raised on Double Dawg Day mean that the students who attend the School of Divinity may do so while minimizing debt,” McConnell said. “It is our goal that students would graduate from the School of Divinity with no debt, and funds raised on Double Dawg Day help us to reach that goal.”

McConnell also shared that this year’s giving comes at a pivotal moment for churches across the country. “Most churches are facing declining attendance and participation,” he said. “Now more than ever, the church needs well-equipped ministers to lead into this uncertain future. The funds given on Double Dawg Day will help support the mission of the School of Divinity, which is the preparation of women and men for Christian ministries of many types.

Specifically, donor gifts reduce tuition costs through scholarships, provide essential housing and meal鈥憄lan assistance for international students, and fund international learning experiences. These investments directly impact students such as Ty Hamer-Yelverton, a Master of Divinity student with a concentration in pastoral studies. “I’m pursuing my degree because I believe God has called me to faithfully proclaim and embody the Word of God in ways that help people grow in faith and live it out in the world,” Hamer-Yelverton affirmed. “I want to deepen my understanding of Scripture so that I can teach it responsibly, preach Christ clearly, and help cultivate communities that are rooted in sound doctrine, resilient faith, and genuine love for people.”

Ty Hamer Yelverton
Ty Hamer-Yelverton

The assistant minister of Media Ministry at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C., Hamer-Yelverton said his time at the University has already broadened his vision for ministry and deepened his calling and commitment to service. 鈥淭hrough my studies and relationships with professors, I have been challenged to think more deeply about the Christian faith and how it is lived out in the world,” he asserted. “My professors have been valuable sources of insight and inspiration, helping me understand what it means to love God not only with my heart, but also with my mind, body, and soul.”

The School of Divinity also welcomes international students like Kevin Ngugi Wairimu of Kenya. He is grateful for the tremendous support he has received from GWU professors, staff, fellow students, and people in town. He attends Boiling Springs Baptist Church and helps the Men’s Ministry as they serve the community by building ramps for elderly church members and others in the area.

Wairimu is pursuing his degree to be more effective in his ministry. “My passion is marketplace ministry and youth outreach,” he related. “My background is finance and banking, and I intend to use my past work experience as a vessel/tool for corporate missions. My degree is preparing me to be a bridge-builder in God’s global mission.”

Kevin Wairimu IMG

Help from donors makes his preparation possible. “Having a scholarship means a lot, it’s a game changer for sure and a profound lifetime blessing,” Wairimu said. “The support has tremendously reduced my financial stress and allowed me to amply focus on my education. It’s not just funding; it’s a vote of confidence in my calling and potential to impact Africa and the global community.”

Wairimu and Hamer-Yelverton share a common message for donors ahead of Double Dawg Day. “Your support fuels students like me to pursue God’s calling and achieve our long-term goals, dreams and aspiration,” Wairimu said. “Your generosity amplifies our impact.”

Hamer-Yelverton echoed that giving is personal and powerful. “Donor support is more than a financial contribution; it is an investment in people, purpose, and the future,” he emphasized. 鈥淕iving on Double Dawg Day is a way of paying forward the support that many of you once received yourselves. It allows you to walk alongside the next generation, encouraging them and investing in the work they will do to shape the future. And for students like me, it reminds us that we are not walking this journey alone.”

24-Hour Day of Giving Strengthens the Future of Healthcare by Supporting Hands鈥慜n Training and Student Research

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斆鄱怪辈 University will host the 11th annual Double Dawg Day on April 16, a 24-hour celebration of generosity, community, and the impact of donor support. Each year, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends come together to champion the people, programs, and priorities that strengthen the GWU student experience.

In the College of Health Sciences, donor gifts advance hands-on training and professional preparation. Dr. Tracy Arnold, the college鈥檚 dean and professor of nursing, said recent support has upgraded essential equipment鈥攕uch as hospital beds, low-fidelity manikins, and exercise bikes鈥攁nd helped fund student research and conference presentations.

鈥淭hese resources allow students to apply classroom knowledge in practical and scholarly ways,鈥 Arnold noted. 鈥淓very gift goes toward enhancing academic programs, student experiences, and essential resources that ultimately provide stronger career readiness and increase the confidence of graduates as they prepare to enter the workforce.鈥

Strengthening Nursing Readiness

Nursing students said this equipment is vital to becoming clinically prepared. Senior Abigail Henson, of Kings Mountain, N.C., shared that working with updated hospital beds and manikins prepared her for bedside care. 鈥淭hey provide a safe, hands-on environment to practice nursing skills,鈥 she said. 鈥淧racticing on manikins allows me to learn and grow, ultimately shaping me into a more confident nurse who prioritizes patient safety in real-world care.鈥

Senior India Page, of Boiling Springs, agreed that the equipment gives students a solid foundation for clinical work. 鈥淏eing able to practice skills and get comfortable with (manikins) puts me at an advantage if I鈥檓 asked to perform them on an actual patient during clinical,鈥 she explained. Page said opportunities to practice medication administration, IV insertion, and wound care on manikins made her better prepared for real-world expectations.

Both students expressed deep gratitude for those who give on Double Dawg Day. Henson said, 鈥淵our support directly impacts my education and helps me become a safer, more competent nurse.鈥

Page observed that donor generosity not only strengthens student learning but also supports dedicated nursing faculty. 鈥淭he School of Nursing at 蜜豆直播 has some of the best instructors I鈥檝e had the opportunity to learn from,鈥 Page acknowledged. 鈥淭hey work endlessly to give us a solid foundation.鈥

Opportunities for Psychology Research

Donor support also creates academic opportunities for psychology majors Grace Haynie and Rachel Gaura, seniors who conducted undergraduate research and presented at the Southeastern Psychological Association Convention (SEPA).

Haynie, who plans to further her education in graduate school, described the research experience as one of the most rewarding opportunities of her 蜜豆直播 education. She explained, 鈥淕etting to present our work at conferences, such as SEPA, made me proud of the effort we put into the research. To the donors, I say a big 鈥楾hank you.鈥 Your contributions make it possible for students like me to further my experiences and grow in my psychological knowledge. You have greatly shaped some of my favorite college memories and experiences.鈥

Through her participation in undergraduate research, Gaura said she developed skills that will support her as a ministry leader. 鈥淲orking with both faculty and peers expanded my knowledge of psychology, while also building my confidence in working with professionals,鈥 she noted. 鈥淭hese experiences strengthened my communication, critical thinking, and professionalism, all of which will be essential as I pursue ministry and work closely with youth and young adults. I feel better prepared to understand people thoughtfully, speak confidently, and lead with both knowledge and care in my future career.鈥

Gaura also offered her appreciation to donors. 鈥淵our generosity has truly shaped my college experience at 蜜豆直播 and allowed me to grow both academically and personally,鈥 she stated. 鈥淏ecause of your support, my studies feel meaningful and valued, and I feel encouraged knowing that someone believes in my education and future. I hope you will continue giving so other students can have the same opportunities I had.鈥

Practical Exercise Science Training

Exercise science bike IMG

Exercise science students also benefit from equipment purchased with donor support. Jamiel Col贸n, who earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in exercise science in 2025, will complete his Master of Science in strength and conditioning in 2026. He is also a teaching assistant in 蜜豆直播鈥檚 Carolina Chiropractic Plus Human Performance Laboratory.

鈥淏ecause of your previous generosity, our students are not just learning theory from a textbook,鈥 Col贸n affirmed. 鈥淭hey are running real fitness tests, handling industry-standard equipment, and practicing exactly what they鈥檒l be asked to do in collegiate, professional, and private performance settings. Your donated equipment allowed me, personally, to gain hands-on experience with diverse testing protocols, learn proper procedures, interpret data, and manage the inevitable chaos of testing days. That experience gave me a genuine competitive edge in the field of strength and conditioning and accelerated my development as a coach.鈥

exercise science bike iMG

Col贸n sees those same benefits continuing for current students. 鈥淭he equipment you helped provide is used multiple times per week to train freshmen and upperclassmen alike,鈥 Col贸n emphasized. 鈥淔reshmen are exposed early to real-world expectations and evolving industry standards, while upperclassmen refine their testing skills, deepen their data analysis abilities, and practice communicating key findings to future clients and athletes. In other words, your support is directly shaping the next generation of strength and conditioning professionals.鈥

He concluded, 鈥淚 would strongly encourage you to give again this year, because the demand for this kind of hands-on education is only growing. Your renewed gift doesn鈥檛 just buy equipment; it creates confident, competent professionals who are truly prepared for the field. You鈥檙e investing in people, and their careers, in a way that simply wouldn鈥檛 be possible without your generosity.鈥

Ways to Give on Double Dawg Day

Donors can direct their support to the people, programs, and causes that matter most, including:

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擠ouble Dawg Day, 蜜豆直播鈥檚 annual day of giving, is a special event across campus鈥攊mpacting academic departments, students, and the University鈥檚 22 athletic teams. This year鈥檚 event is coming up on April 10. Donors can take advantage of matching opportunities that could double the impact of their giving. These matching donations are made possible thanks to the generosity of other donors.

In the past, Head Baseball Coach Jim Chester has utilized Double Dawg Day gifts toward the completion of the Masters Melton Indoor Baseball Facility, the new bullpen, and other program enhancements. These updates help the program to recruit and retain student-athletes and post wins.

However, Double Dawg Day gifts in 2024 went beyond the game of baseball. 鈥淟ast year鈥檚 Double Dawg Day was extra special,鈥 Chester noted. 鈥淚t allowed our program to have a transformational experience: a mission trip to the Dominican Republic!鈥

The donations on Double Dawg Day, along with a contribution from Burning Bush Ministries in Pittsburgh, Pa., made the trip a reality for 48 players, 10 coaches and chaperones, including Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service Dr. Josh Parrott. They ministered to groups of all ages鈥攃hildren, nursing home residents, villagers needing food鈥攁nd worshipped with believers in another language.

Chester continued, 鈥淭hose five days were impactful to everyone that traveled there and the people of the Santo Domingo region. It would not have been possible without donor help; their selflessness provided an experience our student-athletes will never forget!鈥

Junior Reid Bertram added his appreciation to everyone who took the time to give last year. 鈥淚鈥檓 super grateful for Double Dawg Day and the donors that made the trip possible,鈥 Bertram stated. 鈥淭hat was my first time traveling outside of the country, and being able to experience baseball and faith in a place like the Dominican Republic is something that I鈥檒l never forget. It also paid dividends for our team and the culture we aim to create.鈥

Every major league team has a baseball academy in the Dominican, and 10% of the major league players are from the country. The Runnin鈥 Bulldogs experienced the joy of playing baseball with children, as well as the excitement of contending with aspiring MLB players at the Pittsburgh Pirates facility.

Team member Lawson Knight, a senior, said the team created lasting memories from the short time they were in the Dominican. 鈥淲ith the support from our community, we were able to not only enjoy the trip but also to share our faith and give back to the community,鈥 Knight stated. 鈥淚t was amazing to see their culture and how they play baseball. Their passion for the game made the experience even better, and we learned a lot from them, while also teaching them the way we play. Overall, it was a great experience that we will never forget. Thanks to everyone for the donations to make this trip possible.鈥

Nick Capozzi, a graduate student, said some of his favorite parts of the trip were playing baseball and holding clinics with the children. Driving into some of the villages was an adventure because the road was barely wide enough for the buses. 鈥淚t was great to work with the kids, finding other ways to communicate with them, and then learn from all of them,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淥n Sunday, our whole team went to a church. It was basically a house right on the road. They were singing the whole time, and the windows were open.鈥

Funds Given to College of Health Sciences Support Purchase of Equipment

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擸our donations on Double Dawg Day can help prepare students in the College of Health Sciences in the fields of nursing and exercise science. Because technology and research evolve rapidly, these programs strive to consistently update technology and improve equipment.

Simulation Mannequins Help Develop Nursing Skills

Students in the Hunt School of Nursing use a variety of technology including low-fidelity simulation mannequins for practicing fundamental medical skills before progressing to more complex situations. Hunt School of Nursing Director and Associate Professor Dr. Anna S. Hamrick along with her faculty and staff have a goal to replace all 16 of the school鈥檚 low-fidelity mannequins. 鈥淲e have secured funding for 10 of the 16 from the operating budget and other grants, and we are hopeful that gifts on Double Dawg Day may assist towards the last six this year,鈥 she informed.

Simulation using mannequins allow students to develop their skills and practice procedures in a safe environment. It is a financial investment to maintain the latest technology. Hamrick noted that the cost is approximately $18,000 per low-fidelity mannequin.

Simulation Coordinator and Nursing Instructor Tara R. Hayes noted her gratitude to donors for their continuing support. “Thank you; we truly cannot express how crucial this equipment is to our everyday work educating future nurses,” she acknowledged. “The mannequins and other equipment play a pivotal role in ensuring our students receive the highest-quality education and hands-on experience to produce the next generation of Bulldog Nurses. From assessing lung sounds to learning to apply advanced cardiac treatment therapies, our students are engaging in realistic, immersive simulations, and for providing that opportunity, we are forever grateful to you!”

Senior nursing student Brianna Payne listens to
a mannequin’s heartbeat.

David Moore, a student in the Associate of Science in Nursing program who graduates in May 2026, said the simulation and skills development play a crucial role in his education. 鈥淭he mannequins enable us to practice a wide range of skills, from basic tasks like taking vital signs to complex procedures like administering medications or performing CPR,鈥 Moore noted. 鈥淲e also learn to assess patients, interpret data, and make informed decisions.鈥

Amber Baker is in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and will graduate in May. 鈥淭he simulation mannequins are important to my learning experience because they allow me to develop nursing judgement,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭he simulation mannequins can be set to deliver certain cues that real life patients can exhibit. With those cues, I can try an intervention to see if it will work, and if it doesn’t, it still allows me to grow from the experience. The simulation mannequins also provide a real-life experience by being able to talk, have alternating vital signs, give birth, etc. So, it allows me to take what I learned in class and apply it with the simulation mannequins, so that I am learning in different styles.鈥

Baker added that the mannequins can generate a heart rhythm, vital signs, breath sounds, etc. 鈥淲e have parts of simulation mannequins that allow us to give IV’s or draw blood if needed or to deal with anything that needs to be inserted into the mannequin,鈥 she elaborated.

Both Baker and Moore are grateful to 蜜豆直播 donors who contribute to their education by helping purchase the mannequin simulators. Baker affirmed, 鈥淚 would also tell them that not only are they helping nursing students, but they are also helping change patients’ lives by ensuring that student nurses are educated and well equipped to handle real-time world scenarios.鈥

Moore expressed, 鈥淚 personally want to thank each and every donor for helping us in our journey through nursing school.鈥

Human Performance Equipment Helps Students Apply Exercise Science Theories

For students in the Department of Exercise Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Jonathan Ahearn will use donations from Double Dawg Day to purchase a new metabolic cart, which is $20,000. 鈥淎 metabolic cart is a device used to measure oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production to assess an individual鈥檚 cardiorespiratory function and fuel utilization during different modes of physical activity, providing insights into energy expenditure and cardiorespiratory fitness,鈥 Ahearn described. 鈥淥ur students use these carts on a daily basis to learn how to assess clients, including special populations, to enhance their health status and overall quality of life. In most competitor programs, all students do not get the opportunity to use such equipment, but all our students get hands-on training with this equipment in multiple courses across our curriculum.鈥

The department needs two carts, and future donations on Double Dawg Day will help buy the second one. Ahearn would also like to raise funds to buy four new cycle ergometers, which make assessments to achieve peak performance. These machines cost $6,000 each and are integral to the program鈥攗sed in labs, practical exams and service-learning projects鈥攁llowing students to apply the theories they are learning. 鈥淚f you consider the amount of practice EXSI 310 students complete in preparation for their practicals, these bikes are the most heavily used equipment in lab, outside of desks,鈥 explained Dr. Jeff Hartman, director of the Human Performance Lab. 鈥淭hese bikes would allow students to further develop their applied skills.鈥

The program has other equipment needs, such as two Wingate Test Ergometers used for anaerobic power testing; the BodPod and Body Stat used in body composition assessment labs; and two treadmills that permit inclines greater than 15%, which are necessary for completing the Bruce VO2max treadmill test. These machines cost an estimated total of $40,000. 鈥淰O2max testing is the gold standard assessment for aerobic fitness, meaning these treadmills could and should serve as a foundational piece of equipment for all lab-based courses in EXSI,鈥 Ahearn informed. 鈥淚n addition, their functionality means they will serve as a cornerstone of all service-orientated experiences focused on community wellness assessment.鈥

He noted the equipment will replace older items and provide new opportunities to enhance student skill acquisition within the human performance and exercise science field. Ahearn observed, 鈥淭hese experiences are gamechangers as the students are rigorously prepared for internships and employment within the field.鈥

Allyson Butts earned her bachelor鈥檚 in exercise science in 2023 and her master鈥檚 in strength and conditioning in 2024 from 蜜豆直播. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist via the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Butts is employed as the lead strength coach at Architech Sports & Physical Therapy in Charlotte, N.C. She noted how essential this equipment is to applying and developing assessment skills. 鈥溍鄱怪辈’s exercise science program did an excellent job providing me with a robust knowledge of the field,鈥 she praised. 鈥淚 learned strength and conditioning principles and developed programming and coaching skills, but I also learned to see exercise through the lenses of exercise physiology, motor behavior, motor learning, psychology, and sociology. I left knowing how to make evidence-based decisions on exercise for athletes of all ages and levels of skill.鈥
