Guidance for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence

Purpose

ÃÛ¶¹Ö±²¥ University recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly influencing teaching, learning, research, creative activity, and administrative operations. As AI continues to evolve, the University encourages responsible exploration of these technologies while maintaining its commitment to academic integrity, ethical conduct, critical thinking, and the protection of confidential information.

Guidance

The following guidance establishes general expectations for the responsible use of AI by students, faculty, and staff.

  • Protect Confidential and Sensitive Information
Users should not enter confidential, proprietary, protected, or personally identifiable information into publicly available AI systems unless specifically authorized and appropriate safeguards are in place.

Information entered into public AI tools should be treated as though it may become publicly available.

  • Maintain Academic Integrity and Personal Responsibility
The use of AI does not diminish an individual’s responsibility for the quality, accuracy, originality, or integrity of their work.

All members of the ÃÛ¶¹Ö±²¥ community are expected to comply with applicable academic integrity standards, professional expectations, and University policies when using AI technologies.

  • Faculty Authority and Transparency
Faculty members retain the authority to determine whether and how AI technologies may be used within their courses, assignments, assessments, research projects, and other academic activities.

Faculty should clearly communicate expectations regarding AI use through syllabi, assignment instructions, program requirements, or other appropriate means. Students are responsible for understanding and adhering to those expectations.

Faculty are encouraged to communicate both expectations for student use of AI and any significant use of AI technologies in instructional activities, feedback, or course development.

  • Verify Information and Be Alert for Bias
AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies, fabricated information, omissions, bias, or other errors.

Users are responsible for reviewing, verifying, and evaluating AI-generated content before relying upon it for academic, professional, research, or administrative purposes.

  • Respect Intellectual Property and Attribution Requirements
The use of AI technologies does not eliminate obligations related to copyright, intellectual property, licensing requirements, or attribution.

Users should follow applicable disciplinary standards, publication requirements, and course expectations regarding the acknowledgment or citation of AI-assisted work.

  • Promote AI Literacy and Ethical Use
ÃÛ¶¹Ö±²¥ University encourages the development of AI literacy as an important component of education and professional preparation.

Members of the University community should seek to understand both the opportunities and limitations of AI technologies, including issues related to bias, misinformation, privacy, intellectual property, and ethical decision-making.

  • Use AI Responsibly in Research
The use of AI in research should comply with applicable ethical standards, University policies, sponsor requirements, and regulatory expectations.

Research involving human participants or protected data must comply with applicable oversight and compliance requirements.

Additional Guidance

Artificial intelligence technologies continue to evolve rapidly. This guidance establishes foundational principles rather than requirements for every possible use case.

Additional guidance related to teaching and learning, research, citation practices, technology procurement, information security, and emerging AI technologies may be issued by Academic Affairs and other University offices as needed.

Concerns regarding inappropriate use of AI may be addressed through existing University policies, including academic integrity, student conduct, employee conduct, information security, research compliance, and applicable professional standards.

AI Detection Tools

AI detection tools may assist in identifying potential concerns regarding the use of AI-generated content; however, such tools should not be relied upon as the sole basis for academic, disciplinary, or employment-related decisions.

Review

This guidance will be reviewed periodically and revised as needed to reflect changes in technology, educational practice, regulatory requirements, and institutional priorities.
